The situation in Myanmar is very serious after the terrible earthquake yesterday afternoon (February 28) because this country has fallen into crisis on all sides due to the bloody civil war that has lasted for many years. The ability to recover from the earthquake in this country will be extremely difficult and will need international support.

China has now pledged to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. A statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country is ready to provide comprehensive support to help with rescue and relief efforts. “We are ready to do our utmost to provide urgent humanitarian assistance and support to the affected areas,” the ministry said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States would assist in the response to the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, which has now killed at least 150 people. Mr Trump confirmed that aid efforts were underway: "We will help."

However, on the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Congress of a series of layoffs at the US international aid agency USAID, with the remaining programs transferred to the State Department.

India, a major neighbor of Myanmar, today sent about 15 tonnes of relief materials to Myanmar via a military transport aircraft, sources said.

An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft will take off from Hindon airbase with essential supplies, including tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generators and medicines.

Pope Francis, despite being seriously ill, has offered prayers from the Vatican for the victims of the earthquake in Myanmar. This is his first public appearance since being hospitalized on February 14.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it was mobilizing its logistics center in Dubai to prepare trauma supplies following the earthquake in Myanmar and had activated its emergency management response.

WHO is coordinating the earthquake response from its headquarters in Geneva "because we consider this a major event" with "clearly a very, very significant threat to life and health," spokeswoman Margaret Harris told a news briefing.
