According to the learning progress, Bui Manh Truong (born 2000, from Ninh Binh) will graduate from the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology in October 2022. However, because he was studying, working, and building a startup project at the same time, he only graduated last October.
Salary of thousands of dollars while still a student
In the middle of his second year of university, Truong participated in an internship at the data science research lab of FPT Software. Thanks to his efforts, the company retained him as a probationary software engineer.
At FPT Software, Truong participates in many projects such as Digital transformation for information systems at clinics and hospitals in Singapore, participating in research...
At first, even though he had good knowledge, he still accepted to work without pay for 9 months to learn about the company's processes and technology.
After 6 months here, he built his own AI startup project. This project was also fully funded by the director of FPT artificial intelligence laboratory and invited to work.
Many IT students are willing to work unpaid to gain experience.
After nearly half a year of starting up, Truong achieved the results of an international scientific article and the first AI poetry product in Vietnam using ChatGPT.
At the beginning of his fourth year of university, in parallel with his studies, Truong continued to transfer to a multinational investment company, Worldquant, to work as a software development engineer because of his passion for fintech (financial technology).
After the software went live, the School ventured into new horizons focusing on the Blockchain field (an advanced mechanism and database that allows transparent information sharing in business networks) until now.
To get the dream jobs above, the male student from Ninh Binh went through many difficulties. With the job at FPT Software, he proactively sought out opportunities and was accepted after several rounds of interviews. As for Worldquant, after 4 rounds of rigorous interviews, thanks to his own abilities, he was accepted.
"Since my 3rd and 4th year of university, my monthly income was about 20 - 30 million VND, and it gradually increased until I graduated," the male student shared about his initial achievements.
Currently, Truong and two friends have opened a private enterprise specializing in developing and consulting software for businesses in the IT field. Truong's enterprise currently has a staff of nearly 50 people focusing on many different fields and specialties.
"To be successful in the field of information technology and IT, you should have the right attitude and be proactive in learning. You need to focus on improving your English skills, accumulating basic knowledge, being proactive in learning and not being afraid of making mistakes," Bui Manh Truong shared the secret to receiving a salary of thousands of USD/month.
Save 2 years to go to work
According to the plan, Nguyen Ba Duc (born in 1999, from Thanh Hoa) had graduated from the Information Technology major at the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology 2 years ago, but he decided to put his studies on hold for 2 years to focus on internships and apprenticeships at companies that develop game software.
Right from the first semester of his third year, Duc interned at a large game studio in Hanoi. After that, he moved to work for a startup project on NFT games (a game system designed and developed based on the Blockchain platform, launched in 2017).
Here, Duc's mission is to develop web-based games that integrate Blockchain (blockchain technology, to store data safely and securely) and NFT (a type of data unit on the blockchain) into the creation of in-game tokens.
To complete these tasks well, Duc must arrange his time reasonably between studying and working, both meeting the purpose of studying and serving the long-term purpose of accumulating work experience.
Internship with salary of 3 million, strive to achieve salary 5 times higher.
When he first started his apprenticeship, Duc received a salary of 2-4 million VND/month. After moving to work at a game startup project, his starting salary increased to 15-20 million VND/month (including monthly and quarterly bonuses).
Receiving a fairly high salary, Duc asked his parents to let him put his studies on hold for 2 years to focus on gaining experience and finding more opportunities for himself.
"At first, my parents strongly objected, even thinking that my academic results were too poor, so they came up with the trick of holding back. I had to prove it with a good academic transcript and a job offer from the company. Only then did my parents agree and ask me to commit to graduating before 2023," the male student recalled.
Duc understands that the Information Technology industry is constantly developing along with the changes of the digital technology society. He devoted all his efforts to the 2 years of his leave to work to improve his capacity and experience. Up to now, after graduating, his total income at the game company is about 50 million VND, not to mention the extra jobs outside, supporting small businesses to control information systems and websites.
" Any job takes time to achieve certain results. Students should try their best while still in school, a huge salary of several thousand USD will be easily within reach," Duc shared his own lesson.
Work extra but don't let it affect your studies
Mr. Nguyen Duc Anh Tuan, head of the Information Technology Department at FPT Polytechnic College in Hanoi, shared that there are currently many excellent students who proactively ask the school for job recommendations, or even apply for jobs at IT companies themselves. This creates additional income for students while also equipping them with experience and knowledge for their jobs after graduation.
"Many good students with good skills and knowledge are paid by businesses with not bad salaries, even up to tens of millions of dong. However, students should also consider and arrange their time reasonably so as not to affect their studies and work," said Mr. Tuan.
The IT industry is currently very developed, many companies and recruitment units are willing to pay high salaries to capable people, even students in their 2nd or 3rd year who do not have a degree. The salary is high but the work is not simple, students must be good, meet the requirements of the job they set out to have such a salary.
Mr. Do Duc Long, lecturer of the Faculty of Sociology and Development, Academy of Journalism and Communication, said that working part-time early is good because it can meet needs such as economic needs, choosing a suitable job, accumulating experience and skills.
However, it is not advisable for students to be too absorbed in part-time work and willing to put their studies on hold. The knowledge at training institutions always supports students a lot in their future work. If they are too absorbed in part-time work or put their studies on hold, students will lack knowledge, and when they return to study, they will have difficulty catching up and fall behind.
Mr. Long advises students to manage their time well and make sure to carefully consider between part-time work and studying. If they decide to work part-time, students should choose a suitable job, not forget their main goals, always ensure the best health, and comply with school rules.
