Many Middle Eastern countries condemn Israel's invasion of Syria, US defends

Qatar, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have condemned Israel's control of parts of Syria, while the US says Tel Aviv's actions are aimed at preventing the risk of terrorism.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on December 9 emphasizing that Israel's attack was "a dangerous development and an attack on Syria's sovereignty and unity as well as a blatant violation of international law."

Saudi Arabia also condemned Tel Aviv's actions as repeatedly violating the rules of international law and "undermining the chances of restoring Syria's security, stability and territorial integrity," Al Jazeera reported.

Israel rapidly destroys weapons, sends troops into Syria, US does not object

Israeli ground forces entered Syrian territory on December 9, after attacking locations in Syria, following developments in which the opposition controlled the city of Damascus, the government of President Bashar al-Assad collapsed and Mr. al-Assad fled to Russia.

Israel's move marks the first time its military has openly entered Syrian territory since the 1973 war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also ordered control of a buffer zone in the Golan Heights under the 1974 Israel-Syria agreement.

The Iraqi government also condemned Israel's actions, calling on the United Nations Security Council to intervene to end this activity.

Meanwhile, the US has defended Israel's control of areas in Syria and expects this to be a temporary measure as Tel Aviv claims.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller explained at a press briefing on December 9 that the Syrian army had abandoned its positions in the Golan Heights after the fall of the al-Assad regime. This created a vacuum that terrorist organizations could exploit and threaten Israel. Mr. Miller said any country would take similar action to fill that vacuum.

Matthew Miller also stressed that Washington will monitor the Israeli presence and talk to Israeli partners to ensure that the Tel Aviv military takeover of areas in Syria is not permanent. On December 9, Mr. Netanyahu declared that the Golan Heights will remain Israeli "forever." Israel's ambassador to the United Nations said the latest troop deployment is "limited and temporary."
