Many countries consider vaccinating poultry farmers against bird flu

The United States and European Union countries are taking steps to purchase or produce H5N1 bird flu vaccines, thereby protecting poultry and dairy farmers, veterinarians and laboratory technicians from the risk of contracting the disease.

According to Reuters, US officials are processing batches of CSL Seqirus vaccine that is highly compatible with the current virus into finished shots that could provide 4.8 million doses of the vaccine. The European Union is negotiating to buy CSL's pandemic vaccine.

Canadian health officials have also met and discussed purchasing and manufacturing avian influenza vaccines with GSK, the country’s flu vaccine manufacturer. Other countries, including the UK, are discussing manufacturing H5N1 avian influenza vaccines.

The moves come as a new strain of bird flu that emerged in late 2020 is spreading rapidly, causing unprecedented deaths of wild birds and farmed poultry, and the disease has begun to spread to mammals.
