Many great writers are returning to the literary scene.

An opportunity for young readers.

Recently, many writers who were thought to have retired have made a surprising comeback. Among them, the most notable are two collections of short stories by two female authors published by the Vietnam Women's Publishing House: Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc ( Spring Lake ) and Da Ngan ( I Will Carry It With Me ). Both collections are selections by the authors themselves, featuring their best and most distinctive works, spanning from 1971 for Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc and 1985 for Da Ngan to the present day.

Both writers delve deeply into the plight of women. While Dạ Ngân recreates the losses, pain, joys, sorrows, loves, and hates closely intertwined with wartime and post-war periods, Nguyễn Thị Minh Ngọc clarifies this theme within the chaos of everyday life, as well as on stage and in the lives of artists, for whom she has long been renowned as a talented director and screenwriter. It can be said that through these two remarkable collections, familiar readers have had the opportunity to rediscover their favorite voices, while the younger generation of readers has also had the chance to find a collection of engaging and distinctive stories.

Many new works were released on this occasion.

In addition, the short story collection, a compilation of 40 essays by poet and writer Le Giang titled "Remembering Mother with Gray Hair," was also released by Tre Publishing House. The book is a selection from previously published works such as "The Undissipating Kitchen Smoke," "It's a Great Loss to Miss It ," etc., showcasing the hardships of wartime as well as her journey in preserving and exploring the folk music heritage of Southern Vietnam, alongside musician Lu Nhat Vu. Tre Publishing House also recently brought back the nostalgic memories of the late author Le Van Nghia with "Saigon Through Memories ," in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Southern Vietnam and the reunification of the country.

Regarding novels, after many years away from Vietnam, translator and author Ly Lan will soon have an event to meet readers in the country to celebrate the re-release of her children's books "My Secret" and "The Black Lizard" . Meanwhile, in addition to her famous novel "The Unmarried Woman's Wharf, " which has just been translated into English, writer Duong Huong also returns with "Night and Sun" (Vietnam Women's Publishing House), which spans many turbulent periods of the country, thereby showcasing the talent and unique voice of one of the writers who made significant contributions to modern Vietnamese literature after 1975.

Speaking to Thanh Nien newspaper , a representative from Tre Publishing House said: "We created 'Silver Hair Remembers Mother' as the final book, a comprehensive compilation of the poet-writer Le Giang's creative and personal life at the age of 95. Meanwhile, 'Saigon Through the Memories of the Late Author Le Van Nghia' consists of excellent but scattered writings that haven't been compiled yet. Through this book, readers who haven't encountered the author before will have an easy-to-read and engaging first encounter. This is also what we did with 'My Secret' and 'Black Lizard' by Ly Lan, with beautiful covers and attractive illustrations, hoping to easily reach a new generation of readers."

Many curated works, returning after decades, also made an appearance.

New discoveries

Besides the reappearance of some works, many renowned writers have also released new works, reflecting society and demonstrating the responsibility of intellectuals in general, and artists in particular, towards the realities of life. One example is *Along the Road 2* (Nha Nam & Vietnam Writers Association Publishing House, 2025) by writer Nguyen Ngoc, which includes articles on various topics, from editorials to previously unpublished memoirs and anthropological studies on the Central Highlands. In his writings, we can clearly see his concern for contemporary issues, about how education, culture, literature, and art can complement economic development to achieve balance.

After a series of novels and short story collections, writer Ho Anh Thai returns with his essay collection , "The World Is Longer Than a Person's Footsteps ." Still employing his satirical, humorous, and mocking writing style, he explores numerous issues ranging from literature, film, and theater to paradoxes and everyday events in contemporary society. Additionally, after nearly nine years since her last work, writer Phan Thi Vang Anh has also reappeared with "The Story of Ti's Family (and Stories of Many Other Families )." This new book focuses more on the trivialities of a family and its very ordinary people – people we encounter daily, on social media or news channels – thereby revealing a life still full of barriers, showing how through smiles we can care for and reach out to each other more.

Another highly anticipated comeback is that of writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu with her new book , "The Call of the Horizon ." Following "Tomorrow of Tomorrows," reprinted in 2024, and "Empty Baggage," "Hands Drizzled by Cold Smoke ," etc., this new work continues to be a collection of short but emotionally charged essays, accompanied by the introduction, "Even when exhausted, one still moves forward, because somewhere at the end of the horizon, perhaps there is still a glimmer of light." The book is expected to be released in March by Tre Publishing House.

These returns to the literary scene can be considered a welcome sign, as, in the face of the dominance of translated literature, domestic readers are increasingly having more opportunities to access quality works by renowned writers, thereby opening up many possibilities for reading and understanding, spreading to new names, and promising to create an attractive biosphere of Vietnamese literature.
