Civet farming model of Mr. Lai Huy Cuong's family, Xuan Ang village, Ha Binh commune (Ha Trung).
Realizing that the economic value of civets is quite high, while it does not cost much in feed and care time, Mr. Lai Huy Cuong, Xuan Ang village, decided to develop an economic model by raising civets. Because civets are wild and rare animals, before raising them, he had to ask permission from Ha Trung Forest Protection Department to implement the model. When he was granted permission, in early 2024, he went to An Giang to buy 4 reserve civets (1 male and 3 females) from 5 to 6 months old for 32 million VND to try raising them.
To raise civets effectively, he went to typical civet farming models in the province, and at the same time learned and researched more documents and books on farming techniques. Mr. Cuong said: "Raising civets is low cost, because they eat easily found foods such as bananas, papaya, jackfruit and miscellaneous fish. However, their favorite foods are ripe bananas and raw fish. In addition, I bought more pig lungs and added digestive enzymes, especially when the weather changed to increase the resistance of the civets. Thanks to that, my family's herd of civets has grown to 6."
It is known that currently, the price of breeding mink (if the origin is clear) is bought by buyers at 8 - 10 million VND/pair, mink meat is priced at 1.8 - 2 million VND/kg for mink weighing from 2.8 - 4kg/mink, but Mr. Cuong's family has no need to sell but to raise and breed.
Taking advantage of the tree canopy in her family's production forest area, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, Ngoc Son village, has successfully built and developed a wild boar farming model, contributing to bringing her family hundreds of millions of VND/year in income. Ms. Hanh said: "On an area of 7,000m2 of production forest land located at the foot of Rao mountain, about 1/4 of the area has been planted with ironwood, lat and fruit trees. I bought B40 steel to surround the area to raise pigs, the remaining area is planted with corn, elephant grass and bananas, serving the farming. In 2012, the first batch of pigs was sold, with 8 pigs weighing about 28 kg/pig, selling for 130,000 VND/kg, I earned nearly 30 million VND".
With the success of the first batch of pigs, Ms. Hanh decided to increase the herd to dozens of pigs and to serve her farming, she raised breeding sows. To gain more knowledge, in addition to learning from the experiences of breeding sow farmers, she also learned through books and newspapers. Thanks to that, the family's wild boar herd grew and developed every year. In 2024, the herd of pigs grew to nearly 100 pigs, both for commercial farming and for selling breeding pigs to people in the area...
Mr. Pham Xuan Phuc, Secretary of the Party Committee of Ha Binh commune, said: Raising specialty animals is a direction that the people of Ha Binh commune have chosen and implemented recently. To facilitate breeders, in addition to organizing for households in need to visit models of raising specialty animals in the province, the locality also creates conditions for households to access bank loan packages. Thanks to that, dozens of models of raising specialty animals have appeared in the commune such as the model of raising snails, the model of raising wild boars..., recently the model of raising civets has appeared. In general, after developing the model, it has brought high income to breeders. Typically, the model of raising snails and wild boars brings in hundreds of millions of VND/year. In particular, Mr. Lai Huy Cuong's household in Xuan Ang village has not yet generated income because the family is increasing the herd. However, with the current market price of commercial civets and civet breeds, the civet farming model is much more effective than the wild boar farming model. From the effectiveness of developing the models, it not only brings income to households but also contributes to bringing the income of people in the commune to 72 million VND/person/year and the poverty rate to 1.25%...
