ANTD.VN - Counterfeit goods are present in almost all products on the market, from spice packets worth only about 1,000 VND to items worth hundreds of millions of VND.
Consumers should be wary of well-known branded products that are advertised with deep discounts on the market. |
Counterfeit goods are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
Japanese consumer goods have long been favored by Vietnamese consumers for their good quality, durability, convenience, and reasonable prices. However, the reality is that the more popular a product is, the more likely it is to be counterfeited.
According to statistics from the General Department of Market Management, during the period from 2021 to 2023, market management forces conducted inspections and handled thousands of cases related to intellectual property infringement of Japanese products in Vietnam.
Specifically, there were 123 cases involving cosmetics, resulting in fines exceeding 959 million VND; 31 cases involving functional foods, with fines totaling 226 million VND; and 100 cases related to food hygiene and safety, with fines totaling 707 million VND.
Regarding household electrical appliances, a popular item in the Vietnamese market, market management forces detected and handled 95 cases, imposing fines exceeding 1.6 billion VND; the fashion industry had 93 cases handled, with fines exceeding 1.3 billion VND; and the most cases were motorcycle spare parts with 611 cases handled, imposing fines exceeding 4.2 billion VND...
Right at the showroom of genuine and counterfeit goods of the General Department of Market Management at 62 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi , more than 300 items, both genuine and counterfeit "made in Japan" products, are displayed for interested consumers to view and identify.
According to the head of the General Department of Market Management, the demand for Japanese brands among Vietnamese people is currently very high, and along with that, commercial fraud involving these brands has also emerged.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Market Management, stated: “The situation of counterfeit goods and intellectual property infringement is currently one of the most pressing issues in society. The negative consequences it brings affect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers and the rights holders protected in Vietnam, causing consumer misunderstandings and reducing the reputation of legitimate manufacturers and businesses.”
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, counterfeit goods, imitation goods, and goods infringing intellectual property rights are no longer sold as widely as before. Instead, perpetrators are exploiting e-commerce platforms to trade infringing goods, making it difficult for authorities to track, inspect, and handle these cases.
Ms. Dai Kha Quynh, Head of the Intellectual Property Department of the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM), stated that motorcycles are a popular means of transportation for people in many countries around the world , especially in developing countries, including Vietnam. Along with the market's growth, the motorcycle manufacturing industry also faces the problem of counterfeit goods, imitation products, and intellectual property infringements, including electric motorcycles, motorcycles, and motorcycle parts.
This is a very frustrating situation, not only for consumers but also for manufacturers.
Notably, according to Ms. Dai Kha Quynh, the trade in counterfeit and pirated goods now exists not only in traditional markets but also on e-commerce platforms.
A representative from Binh Tay Import-Export Joint Stock Company also stated: "Currently, the company is the exclusive distributor of Casio calculators in Vietnam. Casio brand products from Japan are being counterfeited and imitated very skillfully."
How can we stop counterfeit goods?
To combat counterfeit goods, Vietnamese authorities have implemented various solutions and achieved initial positive results, such as monitoring and raiding warehouses suspected of counterfeiting, signing commitments with e-commerce platforms to prevent counterfeiting, and raising consumer awareness through the opening of showrooms showcasing genuine and counterfeit products.
However, the problem of counterfeit goods remains a serious concern. In particular, preventing the sale of counterfeit goods through e-commerce platforms faces considerable difficulties.
Emphasizing that preventing counterfeit goods is one of the key tasks in the coming period, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh said: "In the coming time, the Market Management Force will strengthen inspections and handle cases of selling counterfeit goods, substandard goods, and violations of intellectual property rights on e-commerce platforms."
At the same time, research and implement solutions to protect consumer rights, such as product origin traceability systems to combat counterfeit goods, build online brands, and market products in the electronic environment.
According to Ms. Dai Kha Quynh, preventing counterfeit goods is the responsibility of various departments and market management agencies. However, consumer awareness is the most effective measure.
Genuine products, particularly in the automotive and motorcycle parts industry and other goods in general, have the following characteristics: the packaging and boxes for genuine motorcycle parts are carefully and meticulously packed with complete manufacturer information such as brand name, product code, price, etc.;
Barcodes and barcode labels contain complete information as required by law, and include a QR code to allow consumers to easily trace the origin of goods.
Additionally, counterfeit products may have characteristics such as matching part numbers/barcodes and part names on the label, but the actual product does not match the name on the label.
In terms of color, material, and finish, genuine products are made of better materials and have a higher level of finish in terms of paint and details compared to counterfeit goods.
For example, the cut edges or welds are neat and sharp, the paint is uniform and of high quality, and the materials used meet standards…
A representative from Binh Tay Import-Export Joint Stock Company also stated that consumers need to be discerning and differentiate between genuine and counterfeit products by checking the anti-counterfeit sticker and the serial number printed on the device, which must match the serial number printed on the warranty card. Notably, counterfeit products are often cheaper than genuine products sold on the market, so consumers should exercise caution.
