Master, Doctor Pham Van Giao, Director of the Institute of Applied Psychology and Education, speaking
Master, Doctor Pham Van Giao, Director of the Institute of Applied Psychology and Education, shared this with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters on the sidelines of the event celebrating the 3rd anniversary of the Institute of Applied Psychology and Education, which took place today, April 6, in Ho Chi Minh City.
Master, Doctor Pham Van Giao pointed out a common phenomenon in modern life, with the explosion of technology, that family members have little time to care for and look after each other. Because of busy working lives, many parents do not have time to confide, listen, and understand their children, while their children also follow the changes and developments of society. Many children are exposed to technology from an early age, lacking close supervision from their families. Therefore, the pressures of life, family, pressure and study... gradually push children away from their parents. From there, the negative perceptions of young people are not detected and adjusted in time, so they increasingly have conditions to develop and reveal negative actions.
Master, Doctor Pham Van Giao also acknowledged that students today face a lot of pressure from studying, exams, and school violence, thereby increasing the risk of depression, nervous tension, and extremely dangerous anxiety disorders.
In practice, working, interacting, and listening to many students' sharing, the Director of the Institute of Applied Psychology and Education said that many young people face great pressure from their parents' expectations. While parents do not care about the journey their children are on but only care about results and scores, that means that students are lacking in resource support from their parents. Many students experience psychological crises, beyond their tolerance, with symptoms such as fear, nightmares, being irritable, uncomfortable with surrounding sounds and noises, and not being happy when studying...
The 3rd anniversary of the Institute of Applied Psychology and Education took place on April 6.
In his speech at the April 6 anniversary ceremony, Mr. Giao commented: "The storm of depression has become a difficult problem in schools and society today. The phenomenon of depression among students is becoming more and more complicated, even some students, because they have exceeded their tolerance, have led to many other unfortunate consequences."
Master, Doctor Pham Van Giao cited remarkable figures: In the world, with 1.2 billion adolescents, it is estimated that 10 - 20% of children suffer from mental health problems. In Vietnam, the number of adolescents suffering from mental health problems is at 30%, especially during puberty, 1.5 to 2 times higher than the world. The rate of mental health damage is high, about 8% to 29%.
According to a national epidemiological survey in 10 out of 64 provinces/cities, about 12%, equivalent to about 3 million children and adolescents, have problems related to mental health. Statistics from the Institute of Mental Health - Bach Mai Hospital show that in Vietnam, about 30% of the population has mental disorders, of which the rate of depression accounts for 25%. Each year, the number of people committing suicide due to depression in our country is from 36,000 to 40,000 people. According to a report by UNICEF, there are at least 3 million adolescents in Vietnam with psychological and mental problems, but medical intervention and necessary support only reach about 20% of the total. According to a survey conducted in Ho Chi Minh City, 6% of the population suffers from depression and the trend is getting younger with an increase in the number of people aged 15 - 27.
According to Master, Doctor Pham Van Giao, in the solutions for each of the above problems, there is an important role of the family - parents, relatives around the children, the school, those working in educational management and psychological counseling activities, because people are the center of all problems. Therefore, on the 3rd anniversary of the Institute's establishment, Mr. Pham Van Giao affirmed that in the coming years, the Institute will continue to promote the functions of consulting, criticizing, and social appraisal; research, apply achievements in psychology - education science and other related sciences, gather teachers with heart, talent, and enthusiasm, for generations of students and learners in general.
The Institute of Applied Psychology and Education (abbreviated as IAPE) was established on April 1, 2021 under the decision of the Vietnam Association of Psychology and Education, and is licensed to operate by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
