Many rubber plantations suddenly have wilted leaves.

(QBĐT) - According to the plan, in early April 2025, all of the more than 1,100 hectares of rubber trees of Viet Trung Joint Stock Company will be put back into latex exploitation after a temporary suspension to wait for leaf replacement and fertilization. However, in the past 10 days, more than 70% of the above rubber area has just sprouted new leaves and suddenly withered, causing the latex exploitation of hundreds of company workers to be interrupted...

Standing looking at the rubber plantation with bare branches and withered leaves, Mr. Ng.V.D. (worker at Viet Trung Joint Stock Company) said that rubber tapping workers like him receive monthly salaries that depend largely on the amount of rubber latex harvested. Now, the tapping has been suspended, which means that in the near future, rubber tapping workers will have no income and will have to find other jobs to earn money to cover their daily expenses.

Taking us around the entire rubber plantation area of the unit, Mr. Duong Hong Sinh, Deputy Head of the Business and Technical Department of Viet Trung Joint Stock Company said: Every year, the phenomenon of rubber trees suddenly wilting as soon as they sprout new leaves often occurs, but only at a rate of 1-5%, the highest year is less than 10%.

Many rubber plantations of Viet Trung Joint Stock Company are experiencing wilting and dead leaves.

Many rubber plantations of Viet Trung Joint Stock Company are experiencing wilting and dead leaves.

This year 2025 is the first year the company has encountered the phenomenon of unusual wilting of young leaves on rubber trees at a rate of over 70% (of which 50% of the area was severely damaged), many times higher than previous years.

Faced with this situation, in recent days, the unit has proactively coordinated with the Plant Quarantine Sub-Department of Region VI (Department of Plants - Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) to investigate and verify the cause of hundreds of hectares of rubber trees of the company suddenly wilting at an abnormal rate. Initially, the company temporarily determined that the rubber trees wilted and died due to heat shock and physiological shock. To quickly end this phenomenon, the unit has proactively used drones to test spraying some drugs to treat and nourish leaves on an area of 10 hectares. If effective, it will continue to expand...

Mr. Duong Chi Binh, Director of Viet Trung Joint Stock Company, added that the phenomenon of the company's rubber trees withering leaves has occurred in 2 waves (wave 1 starting from March 14-15, 2025; wave 2 from April 4-5, 2025), forcing latex tapping to be almost completely suspended to monitor and wait for the trees to recover and sprout again. The company predicts that it will take another month for the entire rubber area with withered leaves to continue sprouting again. Thus, the company's latex tapping time has been suspended for 1-1.5 months/year, equivalent to a loss of nearly 200 tons of latex, an estimated loss of nearly 10 billion VND (calculated according to the current rubber latex price of about 48 million VND/ton); nearly 300 latex tapping workers of the company will be unemployed during this period; Rubber processing factories are forced to operate in a state of raw material shortage, which is very wasteful and costly...

Currently, Viet Trung Joint Stock Company is actively coordinating with authorities to find the cause of hundreds of hectares of rubber trees suddenly wilting in mass to find effective solutions and treatments.

“Viet Trung Joint Stock Company is focusing on propagating and encouraging rubber tapping workers to share the difficulties of the unit in the condition that hundreds of hectares of rubber trees are withering leaves abnormally and unexpectedly. Along with that, the company has promptly arranged some new jobs for rubber tapping workers such as weeding, taking care of young rubber trees, planting cassava, melons..., so that they have more income to cover their daily living expenses. If any worker's family is in too difficult a situation, the company will use the welfare fund to support them in the short term, and for the rest, we encourage them to find some additional jobs outside to help the unit overcome the immediate difficulties...”, Mr. Phan Van Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Viet Trung Joint Stock Company added.
