Doctor Nguyen Dinh Quan, Deputy Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation (Central Dermatology Hospital), said that the hospital had just received treatment for a 12-year-old girl (residing in Hung Yen) whose family brought her to the hospital with severe burns and necrosis on both armpits after electrocautery to treat armpit odor at a local spa.
The girl’s family said that after puberty, the girl’s body sweated a lot and had an unpleasant odor in her armpits. After seeing an advertisement at a spa about treating underarm odor by laser burning of sweat glands, the family took the girl to this facility.
Large armpit area with necrosis, oozing fluid and blackened scales after underarm odor treatment at spa
A few days after using the service at this spa, the girl's armpits started to discharge fluid and pus. The necrotic lesions spread all over and turned black, so the family took the child to the Central Dermatology Hospital for examination. At the hospital, the patient was diagnosed with severe armpit burns.
"According to the image of the underarm odor treatment machine at the spa provided by the patient's family, it is an electric cautery machine. The spa staff uses needles to burn the sweat glands in the armpits. Burning the sweat glands like that will not reduce underarm sweat but will also cause many complications, including complications like the one the girl encountered," said Dr. Quan.
According to Dr. Quan, to treat the child, doctors removed all necrotic tissue and prevented infection. Currently, the wounds have dried and the infection has been controlled. However, the wound has lost a lot of skin and is difficult to heal.
At this point, doctors will have to take skin from another part of the body to graft onto the child's armpits. If burns and infections in the armpits are not treated immediately, they can lead to widespread necrosis, which is dangerous to health. Large scars can even cause contractions that limit arm movement.
The girl above, despite receiving active treatment, still has the risk of scarring in the armpit area, which may be contracted in the future. In addition, the area where the skin was taken to patch the armpit will also leave a scar on the child.
Doctor Quan said that the hospital often encounters cases of complications after treating underarm odor and reducing underarm sweating using incorrect methods at unlicensed spas and beauty facilities.
Many cases of hospitalization, infection and necrosis of both armpits after laser burning at spas. In addition, some cases of surgery or incorrect endoscopic suction also have complications of bleeding leading to hematoma, seroma and serious infection.
