On September 13, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a cabinet reshuffle and a leadership overhaul of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
The reshuffled cabinet boasts a record high proportion of women, with five holding ministerial positions: Foreign Minister, Minister for Economic Security, Minister for Child-Related Policies, Minister for Regional Recovery, and Minister for Disaster Reconstruction. This move is seen as an attempt to reverse the government's declining popularity.
According to Kyodo, Kishida appointed 11 new faces while retaining most ministers in the economic sector to maintain stability. Regarding the four key leadership positions of the LDP, Kishida continued to hold positions of Secretary-General Toshimitsu Motegi, Vice President Taro Aso, and Head of the Policy Committee Koichi Hagiuda. Lawmaker Yuko Obuchi, 49-year-old daughter of the late Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, was appointed head of the election campaign committee.
