*Japan is about to have a new Prime Minister: On September 27, former Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba won the second round of voting to elect President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), defeating Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi and is expected to be the next Prime Minister of this country.

Mr. Ishiba won 215 votes, while Ms. Takaichi got 194. Mr. Ishiba is expected to choose new LDP executive positions on September 30 and form a Cabinet after being elected Prime Minister at an extraordinary session of the Japanese Parliament on October 1.

Other candidates in the race for LDP president include former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, former Economic Security Minister Takayuki Kobayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, Digital Economy Minister Taro Kono and former Health Minister Katsunobu Kato. *Korea, Japan discuss cooperation on continental shelf development: On September 27, South Korea had "extensive discussions" with Japan on a cooperation agreement to develop a continental shelf area, believed to have large reserves of oil and other natural resources.

The two sides have resumed discussions on the Joint Development Zone (JDZ) agreement in Tokyo for the first time in 39 years, according to South Korean officials, amid growing speculation that Japan may be considering terminating the 1978 agreement before it expires in June 2028.

*Russia and Myanmar make progress in nuclear power plant construction project: On September 26, on the sidelines of Russian Energy Week, CEO of Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev met with Myanmar's Minister of Electricity Nyan Tun, in which both sides positively assessed the progress of the small nuclear power plant (SNPP) construction project in Myanmar.

Earlier the same day, Myanmar's minister said the country and Rosatom had completed a preliminary feasibility study for the construction of a small nuclear power plant in the country, while work on designing a small modular reactor was continuing.
