On July 28, in Tokyo, Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara, his US counterpart Lloyd Austin and South Korean counterpart Shin Won Sik signed a Memorandum of Understanding to institutionalize the trilateral defense relationship to maintain policy consultations, information sharing and joint exercises in the face of regional security challenges.
According to Kyodo, the latest development comes amid rapidly growing trilateral security ties following improved relations between Japan and South Korea.
The three countries highly appreciated the successful implementation of the new annual joint military exercise in June, called “Freedom Edge”, which covered the air, sea and cyber domains in the Northeast Asian waters, demonstrating “the shared determination to promote trilateral interoperability to protect freedom and ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, including the Korean Peninsula”.
The next trilateral ministerial meeting will be held in South Korea next year.
