GĐXH – After buying medicine online to treat the itch, the patient had to be hospitalized because of severe itching, red patches and rashes all over his body. Here, doctors diagnosed the patient with a fungal infection of the skin.
Fungal infection, scaly skin all over body after applying medicine bought online
Recently, information from the Central Dermatology Hospital said that the hospital's doctors received a patient with a systemic fungal infection due to self-purchased medicine online to treat itching.
Accordingly, a male patient (17 years old, in Quang Ninh) with a history of good health was hospitalized because of the appearance of red, itchy patches all over his body. It is known that for about 2 years, the patient has had red, itchy patches on both arms.

The patient went to the district hospital many times, treated with topical medications, oral medications, the lesions improved but recurred periodically. For a year now, the patient has been self-treating with unknown topical medications and medications purchased online (no label, unknown ingredients), the lesions have spread all over the body.
According to Dr. Quach Thi Ha Giang - Department of Treatment of Male Skin Diseases, Central Dermatology Hospital, through clinical examination, doctors found that the patient had red, circular, polygonal patches on the trunk, arms, and legs, with scaly skin, tending to heal in the middle and spread around; there were red papules and pustules on the chest and back. The patient was very itchy in the affected area.
The patient was assigned to do some tests such as fresh examination to find fungal hyphae, which detected segmented fungal hyphae on the keratinocytes; normal blood count; blood biochemistry: liver and kidney function within normal limits.
The patient was diagnosed with systemic fungal infection and prescribed treatment with Itraconazole 200mg/day, a topical antifungal medication.
After only 5 days of treatment, the skin lesions improved, the patient was discharged from the hospital to continue treatment at home according to the prescription and instructions on appropriate living and hygiene regimen to limit recurrence.
The above patient case continues to be a warning bell about the habit of using drugs arbitrarily, without the prescription of doctors or specialists. Previously, the Dermatology Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City also received many patients with psoriasis who suffered severe complications due to using topical and oral medications purchased online.
Notably, an 18-year-old male patient came to the clinic with red, scaly skin all over his body. The patient said he had suffered from psoriasis for about a year. More than a month before being admitted to the hospital, the patient saw an advertisement on social media for a pill and cream that could completely cure psoriasis, so he bought 3 courses of treatment for 600,000 VND.
After finishing the first course of treatment, the psoriasis condition improved significantly, but when stopping the treatment for 5 days, the red, scaly skin gradually increased and spread all over the body, accompanied by itching, tight skin, pain, fatigue, fever and chills, forcing the patient to go to the hospital for examination and treatment.
Be careful with the habit of buying medicine online to treat illness.
According to doctors, many people still have the habit of self-treating when they have skin diseases. This poses many potential health risks. Because there are simple diseases that become very serious due to incorrect treatment with drugs of unknown ingredients and origin that are widely sold online.
Not only skin diseases, many people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, bone and joint diseases, etc. also often seek out medicines advertised online to buy and take themselves. Meanwhile, doctors have repeatedly warned against regularly treating patients with complications due to using drugs purchased online of unknown origin.
In fact, many chronic diseases such as diabetes, gout... have been confirmed by medical literature to not be completely cured, they can only be monitored, limited in development and help people reduce complications of the disease. However, with the desire to recover quickly, many patients have sought out drugs of unknown origin, making the disease more and more serious.
Therefore, experts recommend that when experiencing health problems, people should go to medical facilities for examination and treatment as prescribed by doctors. They should not self-treat at home or believe in online drug advertisements to avoid "losing money and getting sick".
