ANTD.VN - The number of imported cars continued to increase sharply in September, even though this was the time when domestic cars were benefiting from a 50% reduction in registration fees.
According to preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs, in September 2024, the number of imported complete automobiles of all types registered for customs declarations reached 18,405 units, equivalent to a value of 378 million USD.
Thus, the number of imported cars increased by 22.2%, equivalent to an increase of 3,344 units compared to the import volume of the previous month (in August, imported cars reached 15,061 units with a value of 299 million USD).
In September 2024, all types of completely built-up cars registered for customs procedures for import into Vietnam mainly originated from 3 main markets: Thailand with 8,479 units; Indonesia with 7,080 units and China with 2,348 units. The number of imported cars from these 3 markets accounted for 97.3% of the total number of imported cars into Vietnam.
Among imported cars in September, cars with 9 seats or less dominated with 15,227, worth 267 million USD, accounting for 82.7% and increasing by 19.2% (equivalent to an increase of 2,451 cars) compared to the previous month.

Imported cars increased sharply in September |
In the first 9 months of 2024, the total number of imported cars of all types to Vietnam reached 124,983 units, a sharp increase of 32.7% over the same period last year. Of which, cars with 9 seats or less were 102,579 units, an increase of 35.3% and trucks were 10,830 units, a decrease of 11.2%.
The number of imported cars in September increased sharply despite domestic cars benefiting from a 50% reduction in registration fees, applicable for 3 months from September to the end of November 2024.
However, the auto market in general still had a significant improvement in September when car sales jumped.
According to a report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), a total of 36,585 cars were sold in September, up 45% compared to August (25,196 cars) and up 44% compared to the same period last year (24,687 cars). This is also the month with the highest car sales since the beginning of 2024.
Of these, passenger car sales reached 28,973 vehicles (up 51% compared to the previous month), commercial vehicles reached 7,367 vehicles (up 25%), and specialized vehicles reached 245 vehicles (up 48%).
In terms of origin, domestically assembled cars reached 19,500 vehicles, a sharp increase of 62% compared to the previous month; while imported cars reached 17,085 vehicles, an increase of 30%.
In the first nine months of the year, total sales according to VAMA statistics were 225,583 units, a slight increase of 6.94% over the same period last year (209,927 units).
In addition to complete cars, in September, imported auto parts to Vietnam also increased by 5.2% compared to the previous month, reaching 448 million USD. The origin of this item was mainly from China with 132 million USD, up 2.8% compared to the previous month; from Korea with 87.4 million USD, up 8.3%; from Thailand with 67 million USD, up 20.6%; from Japan with 59.5 million USD, up 31.5%; from India with 41.4 million USD, down 2.2% and from Indonesia with 27.7 million USD, down 21.8% compared to the previous month.
In the first 9 months of 2024, the cumulative import value of auto parts and components reached 3.37 billion USD, an increase of 14.9% over the same period last year.
