Nui Cam pink grapefruit gardeners are 'distorted' due to reduced output and low prices

These days, people in the Nui Cam area are busy transporting and selling Nui Cam pink tangerines to serve the Tet market. However, gardeners and traders are both disappointed because the tangerines are bad, the yield is reduced and the price is lower than last year.

On January 25 (26th of Tet), according to Tuoi Tre Online, many gardeners growing pink tangerines and tangerines on Cam Mountain, An Hao Commune, Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province were busy harvesting and bringing the tangerines down to the foot of the mountain to sell to traders for transportation to the Tet market.

Mr. Nguyen Van The, residing in An Hao commune, Tinh Bien town, An Giang province, said that this year's pink tangerine season in Nui Cam was not as expected. The output of pink tangerines and tangerines both decreased, and the prices were "cheaper" than in 2024.

His tangerine garden in Vo Dau hamlet on Cam Mountain has over 150 tons of red tangerines and tangerines, but so far he has only sold over 50% of the output. Last year, his whole garden of red tangerines (by weight) was sold for over 40,000 VND/kg, but now he sells the whole garden to traders for only 30,000-35,000 VND/kg.

"Many people cannot even sell to traders because the tangerines are too bad for traders to buy the whole garden. Therefore, they have to harvest them themselves and then bring them to the market to sell at retail for 20,000-45,000 VND/kg, depending on the type of tangerine.

"This year's tangerines are bad due to the prolonged drought in 2024. The fruit is also small and black, so people cannot sell them for a high price. Some people make little profit, some break even or suffer a small loss," said Mr. The.

These days, people on Cam Mountain are busy harvesting pink tangerines to bring down the mountain to sell to traders.

Mr. Bui Van Den, owner of the Black - Thao Fruit Farm at the foot of Cam Mountain, An Hao Commune, Tinh Bien Town, said that this year he bought "a lot" of 2 red tangerine gardens with a yield of more than 23 tons. However, most of the red tangerines were bad and smaller than the same period last year, so he could not sell them at a high price and had to accept a loss.

People and fruit purchasing owners in Nui Cam said that this year's Nui Cam pink grapefruit season has reduced output and lower prices than last year.

In the past two days, he has harvested more than 10 tons of red tangerines to supply to markets in and outside the province to sell for Tet.

"Normally, if you buy a whole garden, 80-90% of the tangerines will be grade I. But now, there are too many bad, black-skinned ones. Currently, I sell the good ones to customers for 50,000 VND/kg. The rest I sell for 15,000-45,000 VND/kg.

My preliminary estimate is that this season we will probably lose more than 100 million VND from red and sweet tangerines. Because of the prolonged weather, most of the gardeners on the mountain do not have water, and in addition, there is unseasonal rain, so the tangerines are rotten and worse," said Mr. Den.

According to Mr. Den, his fruit farm employs 13 seasonal workers, earning VND500,000/person/day. The main task of the workers is to select, classify, and pack tangerines onto trucks to transport to wholesale markets in time for Tet.
