DTO - Lai Vung pink grapefruit - a famous specialty of Dong Thap , has long been a symbol of this land. Normally, pink grapefruit only blooms during the Lunar New Year. However, thanks to new farming techniques, the off-season pink grapefruit gardens in Lai Vung district are still brilliant, promising a harvest that lasts until the fifth lunar month.
Mr. Phan Van Sang - owner of Ba Lien pink grapefruit garden tourist attraction (Long Hau commune) cultivates off-season pink grapefruit.
Off-season red tangerines require different cultivation techniques compared to the main crop, from watering, adjusting flowering time, tree care, to pest control. Mr. Phan Van Sang - owner of Ba Lien Red Tangerine Garden Tourist Site (Long Hau Commune, Lai Vung District), said: "The first year of off-season irrigation, the yield was 80%. Off-season irrigation has disadvantages, which are the weather and having to invest in tarpaulin to avoid rain. Off-season cultivation will cost more, but in return, it can promote the image of red tangerines and serve tourists on major holidays."
Off-season red tangerines are smaller than in the main season, but the quality is not inferior. The skin is thin, the color is beautiful, the taste is sweet and juicy, ensuring the characteristic flavor of Lai Vung red tangerines. Off-season red tangerines can last until major holidays of the year such as: Hung King's death anniversary, April 30, May 1 and National Day September 2. Thanks to that, the garden tourism model not only attracts tourists during the peak season but also helps gardeners increase stable income all year round, maximizing the economic value of red tangerines. Tourist Nguyen Thi Thuy Hien from Kien Giang province said: "Previously, I often visited the red tangerine garden during Tet. This year, I visited on March 8 but the tangerine garden is still very beautiful."
The owner of the Ut Hon and Ba Lien tangerine gardens are two pioneers in cultivating off-season red tangerines in Lai Vung district. Lai Vung red tangerines are famous for their bright colors and distinctive aroma. Handling the off-season helps farmers earn high incomes and serve tourism better.
