103-year-old researcher receives 11th Tran Van Giau Award

On the morning of September 16, the Tran Van Giau Award Committee held the 11th Tran Van Giau Science Award Ceremony in 2023. Accordingly, the work Gia Dinh-Sai Gon-Ho Chi Minh City: Long Mile of History (1698-2020) by researcher Nguyen Dinh Tu was honored to receive this year's award. This work has 6 main parts, including 2 volumes with timelines: volume 1 from 1698-1945 and volume 2 from 1945-2020.

Researcher Nguyen Dinh Tu (103 years old) received the 11th Tran Van Giau Science Award this year.

The work Gia Dinh-Sai Gon-Ho Chi Minh City: A Long History (1698-2020) is considered the result of over 20 years of research by researcher Nguyen Dinh Tu. With a passion for history, he has focused his time and energy on going to libraries and the National Archives Center II in Ho Chi Minh City to collect documents and complete the Gia Dinh-Sai Gon-Ho Chi Minh City project with the desire to provide comprehensive information to the public about history from prehistoric times to present-day Ho Chi Minh City.

Researcher Nguyen Dinh Tu said that through this work, he wants to provide readers with a comprehensive, general, and specific view of historical periods from 1698-2020.

"This work is like a handbook that every agency, cadre, civil servant, and family in the city should have so that when they want to look up an issue related to the city, they just need to open the book and they will be satisfied immediately, without having to look far," researcher Nguyen Dinh Tu shared.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai congratulated researcher Nguyen Dinh Tu for his meaningful and valuable work that received the prestigious award, the Tran Van Giau Science Award. Mr. Mai assessed that the winning works are scientific, serious, valuable works, containing much dedication to the history and culture of the whole country, the South and Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Mai hopes that in the coming time, there will be more valuable works from associations, organizations, institutes, schools, and localities receiving the Tran Van Giau Award, to form a valuable and important data warehouse to help the research process. From there, it will be the basis for planning, development strategies as well as proposing policies for the city's development.

The Tran Van Giau Award was established in 2002, from the wish of Professor Tran Van Giau to establish a scientific award for research works on history and history of thought in the Southern region, the South Central region and Ho Chi Minh City.

The works awarded the Tran Van Giau Award are research works of high scientific quality, good reference value and wide influence. From there, they have contributed to promoting research and compilation of works written about the land and people of the South, contributing to enriching Vietnamese knowledge and culture.

Previously, the Tran Van Giau Award Committee selected and awarded 10 prizes to the following works: Nguyen Tri Phuong (2003); Land and land registers of the Nguyen Dynasty (2005); History of the Southern resistance war against the French (2006); Archaeological relics of the Oc Eo - post-Oc Eo culture period in An - Giang (2009); History of the Southern resistance war against the US (2010); History of the Southwest resistance war (2011); History of the formation and development of the Southern region (2015); The Southern region - the process of formation and development (2017); Southern archaeology in prehistoric and early historical periods (2019); The Southern region - 10 volumes (2020).
