RIA Novosti news agency reported that dismantling of equipment during repairs led to the explosion at the Promsintez plant in the city of Chapayevsk.
Promsintez is one of the largest industrial explosives manufacturers in Russia, employing 1,300 people and supplying products to the mining and oil and gas sectors.
Accidents at Russian factories are relatively common due to lax safety regulations. Last June, four people were killed in an explosion at a gunpowder factory in Tambov, southeast of Moscow.
