Thermal power plant in Quang Binh switches from coal to gas

On the afternoon of September 5, the People's Committee of Quang Binh province held a ceremony to hand over the decision approving the adjustment of the investment policy of the Quang Trach II LNG Thermal Power Plant Project of Vietnam Electricity Group.

The Quang Trach II Thermal Power Plant Project has been approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 215 dated February 18, 2021, invested by Vietnam Electricity Group, with a capacity of 1,200 MW, traditional condensing thermal power technology, using coal fuel, the total investment of the project is 48,156 billion VND; the commercial operation progress of Unit 1 is in 2028, Unit 2 is in 2029; the implementation location is in Hon La Economic Zone, belonging to Quang Trach Power Center.

At the request of Quang Binh province and Vietnam Electricity Group, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has submitted to the Prime Minister permission to adjust Quang Trach II Thermal Power Plant to use LNG gas fuel, with a capacity of 1,500 MW in the approved power plan VIII; total investment of more than 52,000 billion VND.

The project's objective is to supply electricity to the national power system, contributing to ensuring the safety of power supply to the system, meeting the requirements of the VIII power plan, in order to minimize emissions of toxic substances, and contributing to protecting the ecological environment.

Head of the Quang Binh Economic Zone Management Board Phan Van Thuong said that the conversion of Quang Trach II Thermal Power Plant from coal to gas power aims to gradually reduce fossil energy, limit emissions of toxic substances into the environment, in line with the trend of switching to clean, environmentally friendly energy.

At the same time, it is necessary to fulfill the commitment of the Prime Minister of Vietnam at the COP26 Conference on achieving net zero emissions by 2050, contributing to solving the climate crisis.

Vice Chairman of Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee Phan Phong Phu requested that Vietnam Electricity Group soon complete legal procedures to implement the project construction in accordance with the objectives, scale and progress as required by the Prime Minister, ministries, central branches, the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, and the People's Committee of Quang Binh Province on the project investment policy. Strive to start the project in October 2025, put Unit 1 into commercial operation in 2028, and put Unit 2 into commercial operation in 2029 according to the schedule approved by the Prime Minister.
