The People's Committee of Kon Tum province has just issued a document directing the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to inspect and handle information about the situation of Kon Tum Sugar Joint Stock Company being slow to purchase sugarcane from people.
According to statistics, there are still more than 350 hectares of sugarcane that have passed the harvest schedule but sugarcane growers have not been able to harvest because Kon Tum Sugar Joint Stock Company has not yet allowed sugarcane to be imported to the factory. According to the seasonal schedule, sugarcane harvesting takes place simultaneously before the Lunar New Year.
However, by the end of February 2024, only about 55% of the eligible sugarcane area in Kon Tum city had been harvested, causing sugarcane farmers to be extremely worried. Kon Tum City People's Committee also worked with Kon Tum Sugar Joint Stock Company to find a quick and timely solution, ensuring the rights and interests of sugarcane growers in the area.
According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Quang - Deputy General Director of Kon Tum Sugar Joint Stock Company, due to the need to repair and upgrade new equipment to put it into effective operation, sugarcane pressing for the 2023-2024 crop year is 20 days behind schedule.
The Company's raw material area accounts for more than 60% of young sugarcane and alluvial soil along rivers and streams, low-lying land, semi-flooded land and more than 70% of medium and medium-late ripening sugarcane varieties. These sugarcane varieties hardly flower or flower very little, so it will not affect the quality of the sugarcane.
The company has organized the purchase of sugarcane from farmers right from the beginning of the production season, organized the cutting of sugarcane areas that are ripe first to harvest first, the stem sugarcane is cut first, the young sugarcane is cut later, the high sugarcane is cut first, the low sugarcane is cut later. Currently, the company has issued a policy to support additional costs for areas and output of raw sugarcane that are cut after Tet, with a support level of 20,000 VND/ton of clean sugarcane.
The factory has been operating stably, the purchasing work has also met the cutting needs of farmers in Kon Tum province and it is expected that by the end of March 2024, the Company will purchase all sugarcane output in the province.
Kon Tum province currently has about 1,219 hectares of sugarcane, and the province has a policy to develop the area of raw sugarcane in the 2023-2024 crop year to about 2,000 hectares. Kon Tum city is the locality with the largest sugarcane area in Kon Tum province, with more than 832 hectares of sugarcane eligible for harvest.
