DNVN - On August 19, Viettel Telecom Corporation announced that it had successfully researched and deployed the first 5G SA network in Vietnam. This can be considered an important step towards officially providing commercial 5G services.
Thus, in just over 3 months since being granted a frequency license by the Ministry of Information and Communications for network operators to commercialize 5G, Viettel has become the first unit in Vietnam to successfully deploy a standalone 5G network - 5G Standalone (SA).
Unlike 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) developed on 4G network infrastructure, 5G SA is a more advanced and completely independent version that helps improve flexibility, scalability and provide many new services.
Viettel deploys 5G SA network, promising to provide diverse services for individual and corporate customers, such as: high-speed data service group, smart 5G SA calls with language translation function, subtitle display...
Quality on Demand service: is a service-based payment package that allows customers to flexibly choose different service quality at the desired time. Customers can proactively choose to prioritize high speed, low latency... according to their needs.
5G Wireless Internet Service (5G FWA-Fixed Wireless Access): users are provided with high-speed Internet service on 5G network, which can replace the current fiber-optic Internet service to households.
Private mobile network service (5G Private Mobile Network): is a service that shares infrastructure with the public network thanks to the network slicing feature, helping to flexibly use network resources and reduce costs for customers. Private mobile networks have advantages of high security, low latency, meeting the large number of connections... suitable for the needs of businesses in factories, industrial parks, seaports...
Viettel also provides open-standard application development protocols that help application programming companies directly use the network operator's 5G network capacity to create new business services. The service helps open up a new business model and transform the traditional telecommunications network into a platform to promote innovation to the community.
To deploy 5G SA, in addition to the large cost that network operators have to spend to completely invest in a new core network system, the biggest challenge is the configuration to connect this system with radio devices when all must comply with 5G standards.
Globally, it usually takes 1 to 2 years for network operators to complete the construction of a commercial 5G SA network. According to the GSA report, by the end of the first quarter of 2024, only about 58 countries have successfully tested 5G SA out of a total of 175 countries that are commercializing or testing 5G. The main reason is the difficulty and complexity in deploying a 5G SA network compared to 5G NSA.
With their efforts, in a very short time, Viettel engineers have completed the deployment and successful integration of important services such as data, voice over 5G, messaging... making Viettel the first network operator in Vietnam to complete the deployment of 5G SA in Vietnam.
Currently, Viettel is continuing to closely coordinate with major smartphone brands popular in the Vietnamese market such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo... to upgrade commercial firmware for smartphone devices supporting 5G SA network with the goal of providing the most current 5G network to customers right at the time of launch.
