The family of Mr. Do Cao Thua (also known as Bay Quy - born in 1917), the owner of the house, said: "Mr. Thua's father was the one who built this house. The team of foremen were hired from the North to feed and provide for them for 3 years to complete the house."
No one remembers exactly when the house was built, but they only know that they have lived in this house since they were young. The predecessors recounted that the construction of the house was extremely elaborate and costly. To have soil to pour the foundation, a strong and powerful team of workers was needed to get it from Binh Hoa hamlet, Thanh Phuoc commune (now Thanh Phuoc ward). Then, it was transported by ox cart to the ferry in Uyen Hung commune, and from there, a boat was used to transport it across the river to Bach Dang islet. Here, a team of workers carried the soil to the construction site of the house.
Do Cao Thua ancient house was built around the end of the 19th century, with an area of 500m2. On June 2, 2004, Binh Duong Provincial People's Committee recognized this house as a provincial-level ancient house architectural relic.
The ancient house is built in the horizontal T-shaped architectural style with an upper house and a lower house, with a thick yin-yang tiled roof, creating coolness in the dry season and warmth in the rainy season.
The front roof has a low slope of 1.8m from the ground and the garden makes the house look quite simple from the outside.
The house floor is 0.8m higher than the ground, surrounded by 30cm wide laterite bars, very solid and sturdy.
The corridor is 1.2m wide with a row of 11 columns, 1.8m high, very solidly cast, each column is placed on a 30cm high round stone block.
Inside the house, the family altar is placed in the Vietnamese style of altar architecture, in the middle is the altar table, with a wooden plaque carved with ancient patterns, a Chinese text placed in the middle of the altar. Outside is a pair of parallel sentences attached to the two columns on either side of the altar.
The horizontal plaque is still clear (Chinese transcription: Du Fu Ci - Du family's temple)
Inside the house there are 36 large wooden columns made from precious woods in the region. The wooden surface is still shiny after a long time. The two ends of the columns are slightly narrowed, while the middle part of the column is bulging.
Up to now, through many generations, the house has been preserved and maintained, because this is a testament to the economic, cultural and social development of the Vietnamese people on the fertile island - Bach Dang island.
