The Obstetrics Department of the Central Tropical Diseases Hospital ( Hanoi ) recently treated a 19-year-old female patient who was admitted due to postpartum hemorrhage.
The patient, who was 24 weeks pregnant with her first child, had no indication for termination of pregnancy. For personal reasons, she purchased abortion pills online and took them on her own. After taking the pills, she experienced dizziness, severe abdominal pain, and continuous bleeding. Her family immediately took her to the emergency room at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
Doctors advise pregnant women against buying abortion pills and using them at home without consulting a doctor.
At this time, the patient exhibited symptoms of postpartum hemorrhage, low blood pressure, and shock due to blood loss. Upon further examination, doctors discovered that the patient's gestational sac had partially miscarried. Fortunately, thanks to timely emergency care, the patient has overcome the critical condition and her health is gradually stabilizing.
Obstetricians at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases warn that when considering abortion, instead of going to hospitals or specialized medical facilities for examination and advice on appropriate intervention methods, many women self-administer abortion pills at home or use folk remedies with the hope of expelling the fetus. Such actions are very dangerous and pose many life-threatening risks if complications occur.
Medical abortion is typically indicated when the pregnancy is less than 7 weeks old, the ultrasound confirms the pregnancy is implanted in the uterine cavity, and the mother does not have underlying medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease or other blood disorders. Medical abortion is considered safe and effective, but it must be performed under the close supervision and guidance of an obstetrician at a medical facility.
Pregnant women should not buy abortion pills to use at home on their own initiative because it can easily lead to complications such as hemorrhage and infection, seriously threatening their health and lives.
After an abortion, it's important to get adequate rest and nutrition to help the body recover quickly. Regular follow-up appointments with your doctor are also crucial to avoid complications that could affect future reproductive health.
Today, there are various abortion methods such as medical abortion (using medication) and surgical abortion (vacuum aspiration)... However, complications arising from the procedure, especially if not performed at qualified medical facilities, can have serious consequences for both physical and psychological health.
Multiple abortions or self-administering abortion pills pose significant risks to the health and future of young people. Serious complications can occur, including bleeding, infection, and uterine perforation. Even with safe abortions, the risk of secondary infertility is very high. Abortion also has severe psychological consequences, causing trauma to women, including feelings of guilt about abandoning their child. Furthermore, unsafe abortions increase the risk of infertility.
