The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said the tsunami threat had largely passed by Friday afternoon.
They had previously warned of the possibility of waves up to 1 meter above tide level at 26 locations in the South Pacific.

Vanuatu has withdrawn the warning and said no further destructive tsunamis are expected, according to the Vanuatu Department of Meteorology & Geohazards website.
Following the earthquake, Australia's meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for Lord Howe Island off the country's east coast, warning about 450 residents to stay away from the water's edge due to strong waves and currents. The warning was later downgraded.
“We haven’t moved to higher ground yet and we probably won’t,” said Damien Ball of Thompsons Grocery on Lord Howe Islands. “We’ve been through this many times before and nothing has happened.”
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 38 km.
