According to Bkav, this number tends to decrease compared to previous years. This is a good thing, but the domestic cyber security situation still has many hot issues when attacks using data encryption viruses continue to increase, targeting important servers; computers without internet connection can also be attacked by APT (Advanced Persistent Threats) espionage; online financial fraud shows no signs of cooling down because the source is junk bank accounts...
Many damages caused by computer viruses in 2023 due to users' subjectivity
Bkav's cybersecurity survey report recorded that the rate of users receiving fraudulent messages and calls continues to increase. If in 2022, this number was 69.6%, in 2023 it was 73%.
Online financial fraud has exploded in recent years and has become a problem as victims come from all walks of life and live anywhere. In financial fraud cases, criminals ask users to transfer money via bank accounts. However, when investigating, these accounts are not owned by the owner, making it difficult for authorities to find criminals and prevent fraud. Bkav experts analyzed that junk bank accounts are the source of online financial fraud in Vietnam in recent times.
Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong, Director of Cyber Security at Bkav, said: "The reason is that the buying and selling and exchanging of bank accounts is taking place. too easy. Many people simply think that selling accounts they do not use will not be a problem. But in reality, bad guys have taken advantage of these bank accounts to conduct illegal transactions, hide the origin, making it difficult for the investigation agency."
On black market channels on Facebook, Telegram, Twitter, etc., the buying and selling of junk bank accounts is bustling. Over the past year, the police have dismantled many rings that sold thousands of bank accounts abroad, with transaction values of these accounts reaching hundreds of billions of VND.
In 2023, Bkav's virus monitoring and warning system recorded up to 745,000 computers infected with account-stealing viruses (Facebook, banks), an increase of 40% compared to 2022. The most widespread strains include RedLineStealer, ArkeiStealer, Fabookie... all of which are in the top 20 most contagious viruses in Vietnam. If last year, these viruses were still "primitive", only stealing account data, passwords, cookies... this year, they have been "upgraded" to specifically target Facebook Business accounts, querying for additional information about payment methods, balances... Successfully exploited, hackers use the victim's account to silently run ads instead of immediately taking over the account in order to earn more profit, improve the ranking (SEO) of websites spreading malware...
Viruses that steal accounts are mainly spread through cracked software. This is also consistent with the survey results of Bkav when up to 53% of computers in Vietnam use cracked software. This leads to about 10% of users in Vietnam losing their social network, email, and banking accounts... These stolen accounts will be used by bad guys to continue to scam the victims' friends and relatives.
