Vietnamese tighten spending but still love to travel, prioritize saving costs

Vietnamese travel demand will continue to increase in 2025, but will prioritize cost-saving options, especially accommodation, according to a survey by Agoda.

Contrary to forecasts that Vietnamese are tightening their non-essential spending in 2024 and beyond, a new study from Agoda shows that demand tourism of Vietnamese people will continue to increase in 2025.

According to a survey from an online travel platform, 90% of Vietnamese travelers have planned their travel budget for 2025 to be the same or higher than in 2024. Of which, 29% plan to increase their budget, 61% will maintain the same spending level as in 2024 to explore exciting journeys next year.

Agoda data also revealed that 86% plan to maintain or increase the number of trips compared to 2024. In contrast, only 14% said they would reduce the number of trips they take next year.

With a passion for exploring new horizons, nearly 40% of Vietnamese tourists are planning to conquer foreign destinations in the coming year. Notably, 94% of survey participants said that 2025 will be a "new year, new destination". Many tourists want to experience new lands, both domestically and internationally, instead of returning to familiar destinations.

Meanwhile, a recent report by research company Cimigo also noted that Vietnamese consumers tend to spend more economically, due to concerns about family finances.

The report shows that tourists are minimizing unnecessary spending, delaying or cutting back on large expenses and focusing on buying products and services that they really need.

On the other hand, Agoda’s research shows that travel is still a hobby for many Vietnamese families. They consider trips with family and friends to be important and are willing to spend money to enjoy these meaningful experiences.

Don't wait for a lot of money to travel

Research from Cimigo shows that Vietnamese tourists prioritize options Save money, especially when choosing accommodation for your trip.

According to the survey, 55% of tourists said that the top factor influencing their travel decisions is the trip budget. Of which, 64% of survey participants said that the total cost of a one-night stay that they are willing to pay is less than 6.4 million VND (about 250 USD).

In particular, hotels are the most preferred type of accommodation for this group of tourists, accounting for 88%; followed by luxury resorts or boutique hotels (42%).

The combination of luxury and cost-effective accommodation options shows that Vietnamese people prioritize looking for attractive and valuable deals.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Lam, country director of Agoda Vietnam, said that despite tighter financial resources, Vietnamese tourists still prioritize experiences with spiritual value with family and friends over spending.

Commenting on the travel trends of Vietnamese people, Ms. Cao Thi Tuyet Lan - Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association - also said that currently, many families want to travel together every year, and where to go depends on the budget. "In the past, generations of grandparents and parents only cared about working and rarely thought about enjoying life. But the habit of saving has gradually decreased, and now families are gradually changing their concept of spending and traveling. They spend more time traveling with family members," Ms. Lan shared.
