Many Vietnamese people in North America, Canada... are extremely excited to see the total solar eclipse. They are even happier when they can join the atmosphere with the locals or are given 30 minutes off by their company to witness the rare phenomenon.
On the afternoon of April 8 (early morning of April 9, Vietnam time), a total solar eclipse was visible in northern Mexico, parts of 15 US states and southeastern Canada. This is one of the most watched solar eclipses ever, with more than 32 million people living in the path of totality, a 185 km wide path across North America, where the moon will cover 100% of the sun's disk. Pham Minh Man (26 years old), currently studying and working in Guelph City, Ontario, Canada, is one of the Vietnamese people who can admire this amazing phenomenon. Nearly a month ago, Man saw local newspapers and radio stations reporting on the upcoming solar eclipse. In the days leading up to the event, social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook simultaneously reported, reminding people to protect their eyes by wearing ISO 12312-2 standard eclipse viewing glasses.

In the city of Guelph, there are events where people watch the eclipse together. For example, the Guelph Public Library   The Public Library distributed more than 10,000 free telescopes for people to view. Or the University of Guelph, physics department, had lecturers bring fully equipped telescopes for students to see the eclipse in its fullest. Blending in with the general atmosphere of the city, Man saw that everyone was excited about watching the eclipse. The streets were very crowded before the total eclipse, people moved to the park, where they could lie down to watch. The eclipse where Man lived started at 2:30 p.m., peaked at 3:05 p.m. and ended completely around 4 p.m. Because he had prepared standard viewing glasses, Man was able to fully admire the eclipse without straining his eyes. "I was very surprised. This was the first time in my life I had fully admired a solar eclipse. At its peak, the sky became as dark as night and people started clapping or exclaiming in admiration at the beauty of nature," Man said. Mr. Dang Son (58 years old), currently living in Texas, USA, shared that he also knew about the solar eclipse in advance from the press. While working at a printing company, Mr. Son was suddenly allowed by the company to take a break so that he could go out and watch the eclipse. "The owner of the printing company prepared glasses and snacks for the employees to watch together. Where I live, the eclipse occurred at 1:35 p.m. and lasted about 4 minutes. Everyone at the company had about 30 minutes to spend the moments of eagerly waiting and admiring this wonderful natural phenomenon.

According to his observation, many Vietnamese people here do not hunt for glasses to be able to admire the moment of the eclipse. Only when it is completely dark, around 13:30, do they go out to watch. However, to a greater or lesser extent, when directly watching the rare moments of the eclipse, everyone is surprised and excited.

During the total eclipse, the sky is pitch black, you can see the stars. Witnessing this rare moment, I was so surprised that I got goosebumps," Ms. Nguyen said.
