As smartphones with a variety of photo editing applications become popular, going back to film photography has become a new craze among young people in recent years.
Not just simply taking photos, many young people want to save real and vivid moments through each film taken.
Thu Ha (20 years old, Quang Ninh) has been looking for film cameras since 2022. She shared: “At first, I bought them just to follow the trend, I didn't think the photos would be of good quality, but when I experienced them myself, I understood why film cameras have become a craze. As someone who loves to explore and travel , holding a film camera in my hand, I tend to capture natural scenery, people and their daily activities. The developed film photos can be very beautiful or not as expected, but that's why it makes me feel excited and expectant while waiting for the photos. The most valuable thing to me is probably the story of the photos. Each photo has its own memories associated with the stories of the photographer."

Passionate about learning about film cameras, Huy Hung (21 years old, Can Tho ) decided to start a business selling film cameras.
Hung expressed: “Although the first photos were not as expected, it was a special memory, urging me to study more deeply about film cameras, from which I gradually became involved in the camera selling profession. I am also very happy because I have many friends supporting me. I have some notes for those who are new to film photography: to get the desired beautiful color, it depends on the film roll used. And film cameras must have a film roll installed to be used, unlike digital cameras that use memory cards.”

The experiences that only film cameras can bring are the reasons why young people increasingly tend to buy and take photos with this camera.
Film cameras are a type of mechanical camera, operated by rolls of film without electricity, appearing since the 11th century. Therefore, from their design to their image color, they all have an ancient look.
If in the past there was only one line, SLR (Single-Lens-Reflex Camera), now there is PNS (Point and Shoot) system.
PNS has the advantage of automatically adjusting parameters to create film-colored images for users. However, many people prefer SLR cameras because of the sharpness of the images.

“I have experienced both types of cameras and in my experience, SLR is rated higher for its sharpness and allows the photographer to adjust all functions as desired. For example, when shooting in the sun, you can adjust the image to minimize glare. PNS has the advantage of taking photos quickly, more convenient for beginners, and the nostalgic color of the photo remains unchanged,” Huy Hung expressed.
To use this machine, besides knowing how to adjust the parameters, users also have to pay a large amount of money for the film rolls.

On average, a roll of film sold on the market today is around 250,000 VND, some rolls even cost up to a million VND. The small number of photos but high price is the reason why film cameras are picky about users.
“At first, I was a bit hesitant about taking pictures with film, because if I didn’t shoot badly, I wouldn’t know how to adjust it, and the money for film over time is much more expensive than the cost of the camera,” Thu Ha said.
However, the joy it brings to the photographer is special and interesting. Both Huy Hung and Thu Ha expressed their excitement and eagerness every time they waited for the film photos to be developed. “It’s really like playing blinxbox, not knowing if the film photos will be sharp and beautiful when they get them or if the whole roll will be ruined,” Thu Ha expressed.

“Film photography is not just an image but also a work of art. Each photo has its own breath, a unique beauty that no editing software can create,” Hung shared.
For many young people, film cameras are not only a place to preserve memories but also a place to express their feelings. Like a photo diary, each photo is associated with a personal story that the photographer wants to record. Therefore, despite the high price, the trend of film photography has been spreading among young people./.
