Must be "ambidextrous" to teach students
Dr. Le Dinh Kha, Principal of Cao Thang Technical College, is one of 20 outstanding vocationaleducation teachers nationwide who were honored at a meeting organized by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs on the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers' Day on the morning of November 17. In the afternoon of the same day, Dr. Kha and other outstanding teachers also met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and was the representative to report to the Prime Minister on the activities of the school in particular and the system in general.
Dr. Le Dinh Kha reports to the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister's meeting with representatives of outstanding teachers.
Having worked at Cao Thang Technical College for 25 years and in the last 6 years as a manager, Dr. Kha sees that the teacher-student relationship in vocational education is very different. This reflects the nature of vocational training as "hands-on", where the teacher is not only good at theoretical knowledge of the subject, but also good at skills.
"If you teach students while always thinking that you are better than them, standing in a higher position, you cannot understand them and be able to impart knowledge and skills to them. The teacher must always stand next to them, equal to them or even lower, in order to demonstrate and guide them. And only by 'standing' equal to or lower than them can they be a support and launching pad for them," Dr. Kha shared.
According to Dr. Kha, when teaching practical skills to students, there are times when vocational school lecturers have to stand opposite to demonstrate, so they have to operate with their left hand. "Most of us are right-handed, but we have to learn to operate skillfully with our left hand so that we can guide students to use machines while standing or sitting opposite them," Dr. Kha said.
The weight of the two words "heart"
Always keeping in mind that teachers in vocational education are the ones who train a team of "machine doctors", therefore, Dr. Kha believes that besides being good at their job, teachers must promote dedication and devotion, otherwise they will produce "weak doctors", hinder production and even cause insecurity for the community.
Dr. Le Dinh Kha said: "My slogan and also the general spirit of the lecturers in the school is very concise, with only two words "heart". With heart, teachers can devote themselves to students".
Because the main job of future engineers and workers is to use and operate machinery and equipment, according to Dr. Kha, safe working skills and professional ethics are extremely important for vocational school students.
To help students understand professional ethics and promote safety for themselves and others when operating machinery, Dr. Kha decided to include the subject of safety and professional ethics in the curriculum.

During the course of studying or taking exams, if a student is not paying attention and makes a mistake in practice, causing danger, they may immediately receive zero points or fail. "Professional ethics and work safety are two things that are closely associated with each individual throughout their professional life. Therefore, I hope that students always pay attention to that," Dr. Kha expressed.
In his managerial role, Dr. Kha has improved training programs, innovated teaching methods, assessment methods, enhanced facilities, and promoted business and international cooperation.
He has gradually implemented digital transformation in all management and training activities of the school. Notably, 100% of graduates have jobs immediately, and are highly appreciated by businesses for their industrial style, problem-solving mindset, and "can talk and do".
Dr. Kha also made Cao Thang Technical College the first and only college in Vietnam to date to achieve ABET quality accreditation in the US and the second school (after Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology) to be recognized by this organization.
Dr. Kha's students are currently present in all businesses, factories, workshops, schools... Some are principals or teachers at vocational schools, some are directors or heads of technical departments...
"There is no prize more precious than the happiness of seeing students' faces beaming when they complete their assignments, especially practical assignments that require thinking ability, and seeing their success after graduation," Dr. Kha shared.
He cares about us both in class and in real life.
I have many memories of Mr. Le Dinh Kha. In class, he was the one who guided us in knowledge. In real life, he was close to us like an older brother, always caring and friendly. More than 20 years have passed, I still remember the lively lessons with him.
As always, at the end of class, he always took time to discuss our studies and our lives away from home. He also oriented our work to suit each person.
To me, he is a very close, warm and devoted person to his students. I remember that there was a student in my class who was absent from school for several days in a row. After finding out, I found out that he was having difficulty paying his tuition because his family was poor in his hometown. When he found out, he met him and encouraged him a lot as well as supported him to pay his tuition so that he could continue studying.

Learning is not just for yourself
At that time, Mr. Le Dinh Kha was my homeroom teacher and taught microprocessor. He was very good at knowledge, professional skills and teaching experience. His lessons always used vivid visuals, and his way of communicating was close and easy to understand, making students very fond of him.
Not only that, he was also very emotional, always close, encouraging and listening to our confidences. I still remember when I was about to graduate and visited him at home, he told me: "Studying is not only for yourself, but also to set an example for your children and grandchildren. Learning a profession is not just to work, but you must always have the spirit of lifelong learning to develop your career to a higher level."
Absorbing this spirit, after graduating, I worked and studied for a university degree at the same time. While teaching, I continued my graduate studies. Many years have passed since graduating, but I still remember my teacher.
