The ceremony to honor the noble gesture of the cornea donor was held by the Ministry of Health and the People's Committee of Ninh Binh province on the morning of January 5 in Kim Son district (Ninh Binh).
Deputy Head of the Central Organizing Committee, Head of the Delegation Work Committee Nguyen Thi Thanh; Vice Chairman of Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee Tong Quang Thin attended with families whose relatives donated corneas.
The Ministry of Health honors the noble gesture of cornea donors and rewards groups and individuals who contribute to cornea donation work.
At the ceremony, Professor Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, said that human tissue and organ transplants are great achievements of medicine. Thanks to them, many patients have been saved, many people have had more meaningful lives. Thousands of Vietnamese people have received kidney transplants, hundreds of people have received liver transplants, thousands of people have received cornea transplants.
The Central Eye Hospital has taken the lead in establishing an Eye Bank and promoting a movement to donate corneas. Thanks to donated corneas, many people have received cornea transplants and returned to normal work and living.
Professor Thuan thanked the families of cornea donors and those who regained a part of their body to bring light to the living.
According to Associate Professor - Dr. Nguyen Tuan Hung, Deputy Head of the Department of Organization and Personnel (Ministry of Health), in charge of operating the Central Eye Hospital, on April 5, 2007, the Eye Bank received 2 corneas from the first Vietnamese person to donate corneas after death, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a resident of Con Thoi commune (Kim Son district, Ninh Binh).
To date, the Eye Bank has collected corneas from 963 donors from 20 provinces and cities nationwide. Of the 963 cornea donors collected, 437 cornea donors were collected from donors in Ninh Binh province, especially 417 of them were received from Kim Son district.
Hope to spread humanitarian gesture
Having corneal disease at the age of 12, then receiving 2 corneal transplants, Ms. To Thi Tham expressed: "Having received 2 corneal transplants in 2019 and 2020, I am extremely grateful to the donor families, thank the doctors at the Central Eye Hospital for wholeheartedly helping me with corneal transplants for both eyes, helping me see the light again at a young age.
Ms. To Thi Tham was moved to thank the families of the cornea donors and the doctors at the Central Eye Hospital for helping her see again thanks to a double cornea transplant.
"I received 2 corneas from a cornea donor in Ninh Binh. I would like to thank and express my gratitude to the families who donated corneas to people with corneal diseases like me. I hope that the noble gesture of the cornea donor families will spread, helping more people see the light again," Ms. Tham shared.
At the ceremony, the organizing committee awarded certificates of merit from the Ministry of Health to units and individuals contributing to cornea donation work; and presented certificates of recognition for noble deeds to organizations and families whose relatives donated corneas.
At the ceremony, Chairman of the Ninh Binh Provincial Red Cross Society Vu Trong Ky respectfully launched the cornea donation movement.
On April 5, 2007, the first person in Ninh Binh province and the first person in the country donated a cornea. To date, the entire Ninh Binh province has had 15,000 people register to donate tissues and organs; on the morning of January 5 alone, 45 people registered to donate tissues and organs.
In particular, 437 people donated corneas and 3 people donated organs, making a total of 440 people donating organs and tissues. Up to now, the city and 100% of districts in Ninh Binh province have had people register to donate organs and tissues, ranking first in the country.
The humanitarian spirit and the beautiful act of donating organs and tissues have spread to everyone. When healthy, they share love with the needy; when unfortunately they pass away, they donate their corneas to bring light to the blind. "Thank you for life, giving is forever", said the Chairman of the Ninh Binh Provincial Red Cross Society.
