The victim's friend Sally, in her 40s, told The Straits Times on December 11 that Ms Hong, 34, had moved from Hanoi to Singapore about five years ago.

The victim worked at Quan Long Nippon Paint hardware store at Lot 210, Hougang Street 21 and was stabbed repeatedly by a 42-year-old man who is believed to work at the same store.

The incident occurred at around 11am (local time) on December 10. Witnesses said they heard a woman screaming and saw the suspect brandishing a knife. A 26-year-old man, who also worked at the store, tried to intervene and was injured.

Ms. Sally, also from Hanoi, took leave on December 11 to help with the victim's funeral.

The victim's sister, who is from Vietnam, went to her brother's makeshift altar behind the shop, which was closed.

According to Lianhe Zaobao , the victim's husband also intended to go to Singapore but did not have time to apply for a passport. A man claiming to be a friend of the victim said that Ms. Hong had moved to Singapore to work to support her family.

The Vietnamese man, who identified himself as Ah Zai, was a fruit seller. He worked for a company that had a store next to the victim's.

"We sometimes chat while eating in this area. She is a nice person and treats us well," Ah Zai said. Both Ah Zai and Sally said they did not know the suspect.

Mr Nguyen Trong Vinh, a chef at Kovan Market and Food Centre located near the victim's shop, said the victim regularly video called his child every day and had plans to visit home in 2025.

The attacker was also injured in the incident. The suspect is expected to be charged with murder on December 12 and if convicted, he faces the death penalty.

According to VNA, the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore said it is coordinating with local authorities to clarify the murder of Dao Thi Hong. The Embassy has also contacted the victim's family to carry out necessary funeral procedures.
