Ms. Hoa shared that the Lunar New Year of At Ty was the happiest of her life, and thanked everyone for giving her lucky money to help her "ease her worries and hardships", while the commune police planned to use this money to build her a new house and set aside a portion to support her livelihood.
On the morning of January 31 (the third day of the Lunar New Year), Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh - Chief of Vinh Thai Commune Police (Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri) - shared that the total amount of "lucky money" the commune police received from benefactors for the woman who lost money on New Year's Eve had reached 150 million VND.
Thousands of lucky money messages on New Year's Eve
Previously, on the afternoon of January 27, Ms. Le Thanh Thuy (42 years old, residing in Tan Mach village) found 1.5 million VND and brought it to Vinh Thai commune police to hand over.
The money was wrapped in a piece of torn student notebook paper, with two scribbled lines of notes about the Tet market, including: "bananas + areca nuts, betel leaves, vegetables + 10kg of sticky rice".
On the night of January 27, Vinh Thai Commune Police went to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa's house and determined that this was the person who lost it, so they returned it.
The commune police also posted a short post, along with a video about Ms. Hoa with her simple, rustic story and her house on social media. On New Year's Eve, thousands of messages and calls poured into the phone number of the commune police chief Hoang Ngoc Minh, sharing their condolences with Ms. Hoa.
"Some people donate a lot, from 50,000 VND to 500,000 VND. On New Year's Eve, I received 90 million VND. I announced that I would stop receiving support money, but my account still reported that benefactors had transferred up to 150 million VND to my account.
I myself was very surprised by the strong and great influence of the community. Through this, the image of the police force was spread, so I was very happy," Captain Minh shared.
Mr. Minh said receiving this huge amount of support was a surprise for the locality and his family.
"The local authorities have handed over 5 million VND for them to celebrate Tet. I will wait until the 6th when the bank opens to announce the statement. After that, the local authorities, Vinh Linh district police and Quang Tri province will meet with Ms. Hoa.
The benefactors want them to have a more stable life. I plan to rebuild a new house for Ms. Hoa. The remaining money will be used to help them save money every month," Captain Minh confided.
The happiest New Year of a woman who lost money
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (55 years old, living in Tan Mach village, Vinh Thai commune) shared: "This is the happiest Tet of my life. I lost money and the police returned it, now I have received more money. Now my grandmother and I are less miserable and less worried. I thank everyone very much," Ms. Hoa confided.
For many years, Mrs. Hoa lived with her elderly aunt in an old, dilapidated, and cramped charity house. Her daughter was married and lived far away.
"I have 4 pieces of barren sandy land, I don't know how big they are. Every year I grow potatoes, beans, and peanuts. When the harvest is good, I can sell them for 1-2 million VND, but when the harvest is bad, I have nothing. I also raise 3 cows and calves, and then I work for hire at sea, doing whatever people ask me to do," Ms. Hoa honestly said.
Every month, she and her biological mother receive social benefits of 1.75 million VND.
The joy of Tet At Ty came to Mrs. Hoa unexpectedly and greatly. She herself could not imagine how large the amount of money was. Mrs. Hoa is considered an honest, unsociable person, with the simple nature of a person from the Central coastal region.
