In 2019, with the guidance and support of the commune government, Mr. Po Xo Hu's family in Sin Chai B village, Pa Ve Su commune, Muong Te district planted 60 Lai Chau ginseng trees in their garden. According to Mr. Hu, Lai Chau ginseng is suitable for the climate and soil conditions, so it grows and develops very well. This is an opportunity for his family to develop the economy.
Realizing that precious medicinal herbs, including Lai Chau ginseng, are gradually depleting in the forests of Pa Ve Su commune, with the desire to preserve and develop this crop with high economic value, in 2018, Mr. Po Va Hu, a prestigious person, Head of Sin Chai B village, Pa Ve Su commune decided to plant 6,500 Lai Chau ginseng trees. By 2019, seeing that the trees grew well when planted in the village, his family and 46 households joined forces to grow ginseng. Currently, the ginseng area of the people in Sin Chai B village has reached 3 hectares.
Lai Chau ginseng has a similar morphology to Ngoc Linh ginseng, round leaves, hairy on both sides, and seeds with 1 black dot. Lai Chau ginseng has a saponin content of up to 21.34%; of which the Majonosid - R2 compound is up to 7.78% and has been proven to have some biological effects that are good for health... Currently, in Lai Chau province, there are nearly 30 enterprises, cooperatives and hundreds of households and individuals investing in and growing 100 hectares of ginseng, with tens of thousands of original ginseng seedlings.
Mr. Hu shared: “Over time of planting and caring, I have found that ginseng is suitable for climate and soil conditions, grows well, and hopefully will bring high income. I hope the province and district will pay attention and have more mechanisms to attract more businesses to join hands with local people to grow ginseng to achieve sustainable poverty reduction.”
According to some ginseng growers, in the coming time, Sin Chai B village will continue to promote and raise people's awareness in protecting and preventing forest fires, thereby creating a foundation for planting and developing Lai Chau ginseng under the forest canopy. Along with that, actively preserve, conserve and develop this precious medicinal variety through expanding the cultivation to other households in the village.
Lai Chau ginseng is considered a "precious gem" in Lai Chau mountains and forests because it contains many nutrients that are good for human health with high Saponin content. In addition, the economic value of ginseng is very high, up to tens of millions of VND/kg of fresh root. According to the assessment of researchers, Lai Chau has the potential to develop Lai Chau ginseng cultivation on a scale of hundreds of hectares to thousands of hectares according to the value chain.
However, at present, support policies and management tools in developing Lai Chau ginseng varieties are still limited; transportation infrastructure to the village is still difficult. To solve this problem, it is necessary to develop and form a production chain between people and businesses; transfer science and technology on varieties, care processes, harvesting, preservation and product processing.
Mr. Dao Van Khanh, Chairman of Muong Te District People's Committee shared: "We are strongly directing communes with soil and climate conditions to develop Lai Chau ginseng. From there, we will build planning areas, attract businesses, especially promote the potential of genetic resources from local genes. Focus on infrastructure investment, attracting human resources and developing ginseng widely in the district."
