The people of Sin Chai B village, Pa Ve Su commune, Muong Te district, are tending to Lai Chau ginseng plants.

In 2019, with guidance and assistance from the commune government, the family of Mr. Pờ Xồ Hừ, in Sín Chải B village, Pa Vệ Sử commune, Mường Tè district, planted 60 Lai Châu ginseng plants in their garden. According to Mr. Hừ, Lai Châu ginseng thrives in the local climate and soil conditions, providing an opportunity for his family to improve their economic situation .

Recognizing that valuable medicinal plants, including Lai Chau ginseng, were gradually depleting in the forests of Pa Ve Su commune, and with the desire to preserve and develop this economically valuable crop, in 2018, Mr. Po Va Hu, a respected figure and head of Sin Chai B village, Pa Ve Su commune, decided to plant 6,500 Lai Chau ginseng plants. By 2019, seeing that the plants grew well in the village, his family and 46 other households joined forces to cultivate ginseng. Currently, the area of ginseng cultivated by the villagers in Sin Chai B has reached 3 hectares.

Lai Chau ginseng has a similar morphology to Ngoc Linh ginseng, with round leaves, hairy surfaces on both sides, and seeds with a single black dot. Lai Chau ginseng has a saponin content of up to 21.34%; of which the compound Majonosid - R2 accounts for 7.78% and has been proven to have several beneficial biological effects on health... Currently, in Lai Chau province, nearly 30 businesses, cooperatives, and hundreds of households and individuals have invested in and cultivated 100 hectares of ginseng, with tens of thousands of original ginseng seedlings.

Mr. Hừ shared: “Through planting and caring for the plants, I have found that ginseng is suitable for the climate and soil conditions, grows and develops well, and I hope it will bring high income. I hope the province and district will pay attention and have more mechanisms to attract more businesses to participate in linking with local people to grow ginseng in order to achieve sustainable poverty reduction.”

According to some ginseng growers, in the coming time, Sin Chai B village will continue to raise awareness among the people about protecting and preventing forest fires, thereby laying the foundation for planting and developing Lai Chau ginseng under the forest canopy. Along with that, they will actively preserve, conserve, and develop this valuable medicinal plant by expanding its cultivation to other households in the village.

Lai Chau ginseng is considered a "precious gem" of the Lai Chau mountains and forests because it contains many nutrients beneficial to human health, with a high saponin content. In addition, the economic value of ginseng is very high, reaching tens of millions of VND per kilogram of fresh root. According to researchers, Lai Chau has the potential to develop ginseng cultivation on a scale of hundreds to thousands of hectares within a value chain.

However, currently, support policies and management tools for developing Lai Chau ginseng varieties are limited; transportation infrastructure to the villages remains challenging. To overcome these obstacles, it is necessary to develop and establish a production chain linking farmers and businesses; and to transfer scientific and technological knowledge regarding varieties, cultivation processes, harvesting, preservation, and processing of the product.

Mr. Dao Van Khanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Te District, shared: "We are decisively directing communes with suitable soil and climate conditions to develop Lai Chau ginseng. From there, we will build planned areas, attract businesses, and especially leverage the potential of local genetic resources. We will focus on investing in infrastructure, attracting human resources, and developing ginseng cultivation on a large scale throughout the district."

The first ginseng garden in Lai Chau has been certified as meeting organic standards.
