Previously, Apple Maps received numerous complaints from users for directing them onto dangerous routes. According to Business Insider , the company fired the executive overseeing Apple Maps, and CEO Tim Cook personally issued an apology.
Over the past 10 years, Apple has added a host of new features, such as public transport directions and the ability for users to display apps on their car's dashboard.
Apple's efforts are paying off as it successfully attracts new users.
New York-based aviation analyst Jason Rabinowitz said that, disappointed with the initial version of Apple Maps, he switched to Android for easier access to Google Maps. However, he returned to his iPhone and Apple Maps after the company updated its public transportation features. Rabinowitz found Apple Maps to have a more visually appealing interface and to provide faster and more convenient public transport directions than Google Maps. Additionally, Apple's app accounts for traffic disruptions such as subway blackouts better than its competitor.
Tom Pritchard, editor of the smartphone news site Tom's Guide, says Apple Maps has a simple interface and clean map design, while Google Maps is suitable for those who want to use their personal data to choose what information is displayed.
In the iOS 16 update, Apple's Maps app allows users to plan multi-stop trips, view public transport fares, and navigate areas using Street View.
In January 2023, Apple Maps updated its features to include restaurant reservations and deals at nearby stores, a sign that the iPhone maker wanted Apple Maps to be more than just a regular map app. On iOS 17, released in September of this year, users can search for electric vehicle charging stations along a route and download maps to view without cellular service.
