GĐXH - Thanh Chuong General Hospital (Nghe An) has just successfully removed an 8cm long leech from the nose of a 37-year-old male patient.

According to information from Thanh Chuong General Hospital (Nghe An), doctors from the hospital's ENT - Maxillofacial Department have successfully removed an 8cm long leech from a patient's nose.

On the morning of February 20, 2025, Mr. BVG (37 years old, Minh Son commune (former Thanh Nho), Thanh Chuong, Nghe An) went to Thanh Chuong General Hospital to register for a medical examination with symptoms of frequent nosebleeds; pain and tickling sensation in the nose.

After examining the patient with an ENT endoscopy, the doctor discovered a live leech moving in the left nostril, the nasal cavity was swollen and had a spot of bleeding. The surgical team quickly anesthetized and removed an intact 8cm long leech from the patient's nose.

Afterwards, the doctors flushed and cleaned the nasal cavity to avoid future infection complications. There was no difficulty in the removal process, the patient had a nosebleed at the site of the leech's attachment, which stopped on its own. No other abnormalities were found in the nasal cavity.

Mr. BVG said that 7 days ago, he went to the forest and drank water from a stream. After returning home, he noticed bleeding from his left nose and went to a medical facility in Vinh City but nothing was found. Seeing more bleeding and discomfort in his nose, he went to Thanh Chuong General Hospital for examination.

It is known that after the leech was removed from the nose, the patient's health was stable, no longer had difficulty breathing and no more bleeding. This is not the first case that the hospital has received in recent times.

Doctors say that when attached to the body, leeches will secrete substances that prevent blood from clotting so that they can suck blood, causing an itchy and slightly prickly feeling on the skin. If not removed and handled promptly, leeches can suck 8-10 times more blood than their body weight, making it difficult for the victim to stop bleeding, causing chronic anemia and infection of the bite wound. Can cause dangerous effects if moving down to the larynx, which can be a foreign body in the airway.

Doctors recommend that people should not use unsafe water sources from streams for drinking or daily activities, to prevent leeches and leeches from entering the body's natural cavities. For those who regularly bathe in streams, ponds, and lakes, if they have symptoms such as nasal congestion, throat obstruction accompanied by nosebleeds, coughing up blood, and hoarseness, they should immediately go for an ENT endoscopy to rule out foreign objects living in the upper respiratory tract.
