Mountain people 'couldn't sleep' because students have buses

The way to school is closer...

On December 10, many students in Binh Tien Commune (Huong Tra Town, Thua Thien - Hue) were present at Hong Tien Primary School to witness the opening ceremony of the free school bus project. This is a non-governmental project called "Going to School with You", organized by the Well Education organization in coordination with the local government, to support more than 114 students in this mountainous commune.

Many places in Binh Tien commune are still very difficult, people's lives are mainly slash-and-burn labor.

In this mountainous commune, people mainly farm and build houses scattered around the mountainsides, making it extremely difficult for students to travel. Leaders of Binh Tien commune said that many students living in hamlets 4 and 5 have to travel nearly 15 km to reach their schools.

This isolation gradually causes the rate of students dropping out of school to increase. In 2021 alone, 12 students dropped out of school. This is also a concern for people and teachers.

Well Education Organization cooperates with local authorities to donate 2 passenger vans to transport students to school.

Mr. Ho Thang, Director of the Well Education project, said that after the project comes into operation, there will be 4 buses to pick up and drop off students every day. In addition, the project will also carry out accompanying activities lasting for 2 years such as: organizing foreign language and life skills classes for students; establishing the "Going to School with You" fund to support students in difficult circumstances; donating school supplies and clothes; rewarding students with high academic achievements...

"We hope this project will be a great success, to create a starting point for other projects of Well Education to continue to accompany in the future," said Mr. Thang.

Witnessing the school bus on its first day of operation, old man Nguyen Van Cao (89 years old, resident of village 2, Binh Tien commune) could not hide his joy.

"Students in this commune are poor but very eager to learn. Unfortunately, the road to school is extremely difficult. On sunny days, the children are drenched in sweat, and on rainy days, they are covered in mud. Many children have to cross mountains and passes for dozens of kilometers to get to class. Some people love their children and take them to school, which also costs them a whole day's work. Since I learned about the free shuttle bus, I have been very happy. Before the bus started, the villagers and I were so excited that we couldn't sleep," said old Cao emotionally.

Elder Nguyen Van Cao was happy to know that from now on, students in Binh Tien commune will have free shuttle bus.

Close coordination is needed to maintain the project.

Speaking to students, teachers and parents of Binh Tien commune, Mr. Do Ngoc An, Vice Chairman of Huong Tra Town People's Committee, highly appreciated and expressed gratitude for this meaningful project.

To maintain the effectiveness of the project, the leaders of Huong Tra Town People's Committee requested the Department of Education and Training to closely monitor and proactively direct and handle problems, and at the same time arrange appropriate lessons for students in this mountainous commune.

More than 114 students in the mountainous commune of Binh Tien will be transported to school by bus within 2 years.

In the coming time, the leaders of Binh Tien Commune People's Committee need to coordinate with the school to establish regulations such as controlling students getting on and off the bus, regulations on the bus... to minimize risks.

"Going to school is a routine in many places, but in Binh Tien commune, I know it is not simple. Every season is difficult, the children's skin burns when it is sunny, and the rain is freezing when it rains... Especially in villages 4 and 5, where conditions are especially difficult. The project is very meaningful!", said Mr. An.
