In 1986, when he was just 18 years old, young man Nguyen Kien Quoc (born 1968, from Vong Son village, Son Phu commune) joined the army, assigned to Battalion 5, Regiment 876, Division 356.
During his military service, the young soldier participated in maintaining the border at Cao Ma Po Border Control Station (Quan Ba District, Ha Giang). In this borderland, soldier Nguyen Kien Quoc did not fear difficulties and hardships, day and night, actively participating with his teammates in patrolling and guarding, contributing to firmly protecting every inch of the sacred land of the Fatherland.

In early 1990, after completing his military service, Mr. Quoc returned to his hometown, started building his family's economy, actively studied and participated in union activities. He held the position of Secretary of the Vong Son Village Youth Union from 1990 to 1999. After that, he continued to contribute as Head of the Agricultural Extension Department and the Commune Party Committee Office (1999-2009). With his enthusiasm and ability, from 2009 to present, Mr. Nguyen Kien Quoc has been elected to hold the position of Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Phu Commune.
“My time in the army has trained me to have willpower, resilience and a high sense of responsibility. Therefore, when I return to my hometown, I always keep in mind that I must live and work in a worthy manner, contributing my efforts to the development of my hometown. Participating in union activities and taking on different roles in the commune is also a way for me to contribute, to be close to and share with the people,” Mr. Quoc shared.

As Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Phu commune, Mr. Quoc has worked closely with cadres, party members and people in the commune to build a new rural area (NTM), gradually changing the face of his hometown. That dedication and determination have contributed significantly to bringing Son Phu to the NTM finish line in 2015. By the end of 2024, Son Phu commune will continue to reap worthy results when it is honored to achieve the advanced NTM standard.
Mr. Quoc said: “In the early days of building the new rural area, there were many difficulties, from people's awareness to resources for implementation. Therefore, together with the union cadres in the village and commune, I went to every alley to listen to the thoughts and aspirations of the people, thoroughly explained the meaning and benefits of the new rural area program, and at the same time grasped the difficulties and problems of the people.”

Up to now, the rural appearance of Son Phu commune has become more and more spacious, the material and spiritual life of the people has been significantly improved. Currently, 8/8 villages of the commune have achieved the model new-style rural residential area; the average income is 58 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate is 1.5%, the near-poor rate is 2.3%. In particular, 100% of the commune's roads have been concreted or carpeted. The system of trees planted and cared for along the roads and in residential areas has created a cool and fresh green space. Public works such as cultural houses, sports fields, etc. have been invested in construction and upgraded, meeting the living needs of the people.
Besides his role as Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, Mr. Quoc is also one of the pioneers in developing the local economy from beekeeping.

Since 1999, realizing the potential of beekeeping, Mr. Quoc has boldly invested in and built a honey beekeeping model. Initially, there were only a few dozen hives, but through diligence, learning from experience and applying science and technology, his family's bee colonies have grown. To date, he has more than 150 hives, averaging more than 1.5 tons of honey each year.
“Seeing that my hometown has many natural flowers and abundant food sources for bees, I thought why not try to develop this profession. At first, I encountered many failures, the bees got sick, and productivity was low, but I was not discouraged. I just kept working and learning, exploring new techniques to develop this profession,” Mr. Quoc recalled.
Not only enriching his family, Mr. Quoc also enthusiastically guides local people in beekeeping techniques, passing on valuable experiences he has accumulated. With his dedicated help, many households in the commune have begun to develop beekeeping models, gradually improving their economy.

To create a sustainable direction and increase the value of honey products, Mr. Quoc established the Kien Quoc Honey Cooperative. Up to now, the cooperative has 24 member households, with more than 500 bee colonies, harvesting an average of more than 5 tons of honey each year. In 2019, he decided to build Kien Quoc honey products according to OCOP standards and achieved 3-star OCOP certification in 2020. Up to now, the Kien Quoc honey brand has established a foothold in the market, with stable output. Mr. Quoc's family alone, each year, from selling honey, bee seeds and beekeeping supplies, has brought in an income of over 400 million VND.
The image of veteran Nguyen Kien Quoc, dedicated and responsible in his role as Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, and active in economic development, has become a driving force for many local people. His tireless efforts have contributed significantly to the comprehensive development of the locality, improving people's lives.
The efforts of veteran Nguyen Kien Quoc are a testament to the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldiers. Wherever they are, in whatever circumstances, they always maintain their noble, pioneering, exemplary qualities, contributing their strength and intelligence to the development of their homeland and country. His example will continue to spread and motivate many people on the journey to build their homeland to become more and more prosperous.
