The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has just approved the dialysis technique at the Can Gio District Medical Center, helping patients in the area avoid traveling tens of kilometers to the city.
On October 10th, the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, Tang Chi Thuong, announced that 16 out of a total of 41 kidney failure patients residing in Can Gio District, Can Giuoc District ( Long An Province), and neighboring areas in Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province have registered for dialysis treatment in Can Gio.
The dialysis unit, supported by Le Van Thinh Hospital, is being implemented at the Can Gio District Medical Center and is expected to officially begin operations next week. The hospital has assigned experienced medical staff specializing in dialysis to directly oversee and manage the operation of the RO system, ensuring the safety of dialysis patients in Can Gio.

Can Gio is the only coastal district in Ho Chi Minh City, located in the southeast, about 50 km by road from the city center. Thanh An is one of the six communes in Can Gio district, and also the city's only island commune, located about 8 km from the district center with a population of approximately 5,000.
Over the years, many chronic kidney disease patients in Can Gio have had to travel to hospitals in the city center for dialysis. Patients in Thanh An island commune face even greater difficulties, spending 25 hours traveling back and forth for each dialysis session, three times a week. They have to rely on relatives to take them by boat across the sea to Can Thanh town to rent accommodation overnight, then catch a bus to the hospital for dialysis at dawn. Many have had to abandon treatment midway.
Mr. Thuong highly appreciated the efforts of Le Van Thinh Hospital in improving its facilities, machinery, and equipment to meet the requirements of dialysis. The Department will continue to work with the Ho Chi Minh City Social Insurance to ensure that patients receive health insurance benefits and can receive treatment with peace of mind.
The implementation of dialysis technology is part of the Project to Strengthen and Enhance the Medical Capacity of Can Gio District from now until 2025 and beyond, implemented by the Ho Chi Minh City health sector, contributing to the re-establishment of Can Gio Hospital.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has four districts/counties that only have health centers and no hospitals (Districts 3, 5, 10, and Can Gio District). According to the plan, one of these four localities, Can Gio District, needs to re-establish a hospital, due to its unique characteristics such as being far from the city center and lacking city hospitals around its health center, unlike Districts 3, 5, and 10.

The Department of Health continues to call on hospitals to volunteer to provide resources to help Can Gio quickly re-establish a multi-specialty hospital, aiming to provide a full range of essential technical services and better treatment for common diseases for the people of Can Gio.
Over the past year, the Department has deployed young volunteer doctors on a rotational basis for a limited time to provide healthcare to the people of Thanh An island commune. The Department has also proposed deploying a waterborne ambulance to provide emergency medical services to people in Can Gio district and surrounding areas. Previously, when people in Thanh An needed medical assistance, they had to contact the commune's speedboat to transport patients to the mainland, which was dangerous during rough seas and strong winds, sometimes leading to delays in the critical emergency response time and endangering lives.
