People with high blood pressure need to know this when exercising to prolong their life.

How will the body of a person with high blood pressure change when exercising?

People with high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) who exercise regularly will help their bodies stay healthy and flexible. Because with regular physical activity, the heart becomes stronger, so it needs less effort to pump blood, helping to reduce pressure on the arteries and lower blood pressure to a healthier level.

Physical activity plays an important role in preventing and controlling high blood pressure. Research from the American Heart Association shows that people who exercise four hours a week have a 19% lower risk of developing high blood pressure than those who are less active.

Choosing the right exercise for people with high blood pressure

People with high blood pressure are often advised to exercise regularly, with exercises suitable for their physical condition to avoid sudden increases in blood pressure, which can be dangerous to their health.

Suitable exercises for people with stage 1 hypertension

In theory, a patient with high blood pressure but no obvious complications, with systolic blood pressure of 140-159 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 90-99 mmHg is understood to have stage 1 hypertension.

During this stage, the main goal of treatment is to limit medication use, balance blood pressure with healthy habits combined with gentle exercises such as:

- Brisk walking: 5-6 km/hour, practice about 30-60 minutes, every day of the week.

- Jogging or cycling: more effective for people under 50 years old, the elderly can buy a dynamometer bike to exercise at home.

- Swimming: only swim, not dive, and do not go swimming when the outside temperature is cold.

- Meditation, yoga, tai chi: especially suitable for the elderly, focusing on keeping the mind relaxed but requiring expert guidance.

Suitable exercises for people with stage 2 hypertension

Patients with stage 2 hypertension have systolic blood pressure of 160-179 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure of 100-109 mmHg, have begun to show mild damage to target organs or have some other complications.

Therefore, your doctor will advise you to combine taking medication to treat high blood pressure with actively practicing healthy living habits to bring your blood pressure down to 140/90 mmHg.

Unlike stage 1 hypertension, you should carefully choose exercises to achieve the highest efficiency. People with stage 2 hypertension should only exercise at a moderate level, avoiding strenuous sports such as soccer, basketball, weightlifting, etc.

Instead, try walking, cycling, or doing yoga whenever you feel normal and have no signs of dizziness or nausea.

Suitable exercises for people with stage 3 hypertension

Stage 3 hypertension occurs when your blood pressure is consistently above 180-209 mmHg (systolic blood pressure) or 110-119 mmHg (diastolic blood pressure), accompanied by many complications and obvious damage to target organs.

If this is the case, you need to see a doctor immediately for diagnosis, consultation and the most appropriate treatment plan.

People with stage 3 hypertension should not exercise too much to avoid putting more pressure on the cardiovascular system. If you still want to exercise, you should take medication to balance your blood pressure before starting light exercise for 20-30 minutes/day.

When there are signs of heart failure, physical activity should be completely contraindicated, just walk and breathe evenly.

"Principles" of exercise for people with high blood pressure

- Exercise moderately, not too lightly or too heavily.

- Before exercising, you must warm up your whole body slowly and gradually reduce the exercise speed before stopping to ensure safety during exercise.

- You should practice regularly every day. Spend about 20-30 minutes/day and about 3 times a week.

- You should practice with friends or relatives or let them know where you will practice in advance.

- Absolutely do not use stimulants before, during and after exercise such as cigarettes, alcohol, or coffee.

- Use a blood pressure monitor at home to monitor blood pressure before and after exercise so you can change the intensity and type of exercise to suit your current condition.

Signs of high blood pressure

High blood pressure sometimes has no obvious symptoms, but can have serious consequences if not treated early.

Common symptoms in people with high blood pressure are dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, tinnitus, palpitations, hot flashes, etc. Some people have more severe symptoms such as pain in the heart area, decreased vision, shortness of breath, red or pale face, vomiting, anxiety, and panic.

Doctors recommend that when the body shows the above signs, it is best to see a doctor for disease prevention and treatment.
