The price of anchovy at the beginning of the year fluctuated from 500,000 to 1 million VND/kg, and people still competed to buy it. Each trip to sea, Thanh Hoa fishermen earned tens of millions of VND.
At the beginning of the new year, fishermen in coastal communes in Sam Son City, Nghi Son Town, Quang Xuong and Hoang Hoa districts are busy going to sea to catch silver pomfret. Each trip to shore, fishermen earn tens of millions of dong.
Mr. Vu Van Tuan’s family (a fisherman in Sam Son City) makes a living by fishing. Every year, early in the morning of the second day of Tet, Mr. Tuan and his son go out to sea on rafts to catch fish.
“I went to sea at 4am and returned to shore at around 10am the same day. On the first trip of the new year, my father and I caught more than a hundred kilos of anchovies, in addition to other types of fish, shrimp, crabs, etc. When the boat reached shore, people competed to buy anchovies at a price of 1 million VND/kg. From selling anchovies alone, my father and I earned tens of millions of VND,” Mr. Tuan happily recounted.
According to Mr. Tuan, the peak price of silver fish was 1 million VND/kg from the 2nd to the 4th day of Tet. Up to now, the price of fish ranges from 400,000-600,000 VND/kg depending on the size. With this price, fishermen can earn tens of millions of VND per raft.
Fisherman Vu Nhu Ca (Sam Son City) shared that no one can predict the fishing profession, some boats go out to sea and catch a good catch, while others catch nothing. For example, on the second day of Tet, his boat only caught more than 1kg of anchovies, selling for more than 1 million VND. On the third and fourth days of Tet, he had a big hit, earning from 7 to 10 million VND each day.
"Every time I go to sea, my familiar traders call and say they want to buy all the fish I catch," said Mr. Ca.
Mr. Ca said that more than 10 years ago, fishermen who went to sea and saw this type of fish caught in their nets would either throw it away or bring it home to cook for pigs because no one would eat it and it had no economic value.
In recent years, this type of fish has become popular with people. They buy it to cook soup or eat hot pot because it has a sweet, cool, laxative taste.
According to local people, the beginning of the new year is the time when fishermen love to go to sea because the price of seafood doubles or triples compared to normal days.
A customer from Thanh Hoa City who went to Sam Son to buy seafood said that after Tet, many families were fed up with meat dishes and banh chung. At this time, fresh seafood was not available, so at the beginning of the year, when fishermen started going out to sea, they flocked to the sea to buy it.
“Since the third day of Tet, I have been driving down to Sam Son beach every day, sometimes buying silver carp, sometimes shrimp, crab, etc., even though the prices are much higher than usual. But I still have to go early to buy a good batch. Among seafood, silver carp is still sought after by many people, so supply cannot meet demand,” said this customer.
