In early March, when the sun had just risen, at Tam Thanh beach (Tam Ky city, Quang Nam), many fishing boats began to come ashore. After more than 6 hours of fishing, the boat of fisherman Huynh Van Nuoi (Hoa Trung village, Tam Thanh commune, Tam Ky city) and several other boats returned to shore in excitement. “Business has been good these past few days, many fishermen here have caught a lot of herring. Most of the boats return with at least 200-300 kg of fish, while the larger boats have up to 500-600 kg of fish,” Mr. Nuoi happily boasted.
According to Mr. Nuoi, after preparing fuel, fishing gear and some decent food, around midnight the night before, his boat left the dock to go fishing. The cost of each trip was about 500,000 VND for food and diesel. The fishing area was 6-8 nautical miles from shore. On this trip, his boat was lucky to catch about 400-500 kg of herring.
“At current prices, each kilogram of fresh fish sells for 15,000 - 20,000 VND, bringing in a good income for many fishermen. If we deduct expenses, each of us earns more than 2 million VND. On average, on current fishing trips, each boat catches at least 200 - 300 kg of herring, bringing in a significant income, so fishermen are very excited,” Mr. Nuoi added.
Fisherman Dang Van Hung said his boat leaves the shore at around 2am every day, returning to shore after about 7-8 hours, depending on the weather and the catch. On average, he catches about 300kg of fish per trip. “Although the price of herring is cheaper than in previous days, only about 15,000-20,000 VND per kilo, the fishermen are still very excited because of the good harvest,” said Mr. Hung.
As the afternoon approached, more fishermen's boats came ashore. When they reached the shore, the nets were moved onto a tarpaulin spread out on the sand and the boat owner and his family members stretched the nets and shook them to make the fish fall onto the tarpaulin. After about half an hour, the two nets were shaken out, and everyone gathered the fish into small piles and put them in plastic trays and styrofoam boxes for traders to purchase.
Ms. Nguyen Hong Hai, who buys fish from people in the Hoa Trung sea area, said: In recent days, fishermen in the Tam Thanh sea area have had a good herring season, everyone is very happy. Every day I buy about 400-500 kg of herring from fishermen, then wholesale them to large fish warehouses.
At An Luong fishing port (Duy Hai commune, Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam), many fishermen have recently had a big catch of herring, earning tens of millions of VND per month. While nimbly removing fish from the net, fisherman Le Lu (Cam Thanh commune, Hoi An city) said that the fishing boat he owns has 4 crew members, all of whom are locals. The boat set sail to catch herring at around 4 a.m., about 8-10 nautical miles from shore.
“On average, each trip out to sea, my boat catches about 400 kg of herring. The fish are gathered at the fishing port and sold to traders for about 20,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, each fisherman earns about 700,000 VND/trip, on a good day, each person earns more than 1 million VND," Mr. Lu said excitedly.
According to fishermen, in Quang Nam, the herring fishing season usually starts from September of the previous year to April of the following year. In particular, since after Tet until now, herring have moved closer to shore to feed, so the output is relatively large, and fishing boats have all had a bumper harvest. Small capacity boats can catch a few hundred kilograms, larger boats can catch up to several tons.
Compared to offshore fishing, traditional inshore fishing does not yield as much output, but at times like this, each fisherman can earn tens of millions of dong each year. After being purchased by traders, the herring is not only sold at large and small markets in the area but also transported to Da Nang City, the Central Highlands and neighboring provinces and cities.
