(Dan Tri) - Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was taken to hospital with a head injury after a collision with Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts in the FA Cup fifth round match on Saturday.
The incident took place in the eighth minute of the match at Selhurst Park on the evening of March 1, when the away goalkeeper Roberts rushed out of the penalty area and jumped high to clear a long pass from the home player, but his left-footed shot hit Mateta in the face. The Crystal Palace star lay on the ground for several minutes and required extensive medical treatment before being fitted with a neck brace and taken off the pitch to an ambulance.

Referee Michael Oliver initially did not see the dangerous collision and allowed play to continue while Mateta was on the pitch. It was not until VAR intervened and Oliver went to the sidelines to review the slow-motion replay of the collision that the famous English referee returned to show Roberts a red card and send him off.
Mateta has been in excellent form for Premier League club Palace, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances. The Frenchman was given oxygen on the pitch during the lengthy stoppage before being taken off and taken into an ambulance. He was replaced by Eddie Nketiah.
Speaking at half-time to the BBC, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said Mateta suffered a serious cut behind his ear, head injuries and was being assessed in hospital.
"He's in hospital, so we hope for the best. There's a lot of emotion in football, but we need to talk about that. In all my time watching football, I've never seen a situation as dangerous as this. I think it's the most reckless tackle on a football pitch that I've ever seen," said Mr Parish.

After the match, coach Oliver Glasner said Mateta was conscious. He said: "He is conscious and in hospital, but his ear looks really bad. It's a very serious injury, so of course we hope for the best and everyone waits for news.
Mateta later posted on social media: "I'm fine. I hope to be back soon and stronger than ever. Well done boys for a great job today." With an early advantage, Crystal Palace easily crushed Millwall 3-1 to qualify.
