Situated on the River Coln, the village of Bibury is famous for its 14th-century Arlington Row wooden houses. It is also one of the destinations honored to be printed on the British passport and is the most photographed attraction in the Cotswolds.
Recently, local people have been complaining about the overcrowding of tourists, which has caused the streets to be clogged with vehicles.
Sarah, a teacher in Bibury, said she and her sister were stunned "to see dozens of foreign tourists arriving in Bibury and immediately getting off the bus to take photos of the streets and front gardens of local people".
Sarah shared: "The car stopped in the middle of the road because there was no parking space, then everyone rushed out, holding cameras and competing to stand in front of people's houses to take pictures.
I know not everywhere has traditional stone houses and front gardens like here. But this is causing a lot of trouble and noise in our little village."
The nearby Bourton-on-the-Water canal, known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds", was also at capacity this summer.
Anthony White, 80, who lived in San Francisco for many years, said the noise and traffic congestion caused by tourists in Bourton was much worse than what he had experienced in the West Coast city of the United States.
“Since moving here a few years ago, I have been shocked and increasingly concerned about the terrible effects of over-tourism here,” he said. “The whole village is very noisy, not just from the traffic but also from the tourist groups that come and go all day and night.”
But Sarah, 59, said people should “stop whining”. She said she moved to the village from Brentwood, Essex, last year to be near her son, who works in Bourton.
“It is true that more and more tourists are coming here, but I think people should stop complaining about it and enjoy the economic benefits they bring.”
