By April 2024, Ngoc Lac district has 155 irrigation works, in addition to Cong Khe lake (Ngoc Lac town) with a designed capacity of 4 million 380 thousand m3 of water, the rest are medium and small lakes and dams, annually irrigating about 2,200 hectares/crop.
Trung Toa Lake (Quang Trung commune) has stored enough water for irrigation for the 2024 spring crop.
Among the above irrigation works, there are 9 lakes and 1 dam managed, exploited and provided by Song Chu One Member Co., Ltd. - Ngoc Lac Branch to provide irrigation water for 920 hectares of crops. The Branch has organized inspection, maintenance, repair and maintenance to ensure the safety of reservoirs and dams. Bai Ao Lake (Dong Thinh Commune) and Bai Ngoc Lake (Quang Trung Commune) have been repaired, upgraded and put into use. Minor damages on the Trung Toa Lake water channel, Cong Khe Lake South canal, Minh Hoa Dam, etc. have been repaired promptly. Proactively storing enough water according to the design in 9 lakes and dams managed by the unit; dredging 6 level I canals to contribute to bringing water from the source to the fields. The Branch has proactively developed and implemented drought prevention plans for each work such as managing water sources of lakes and dams associated with water-saving irrigation; regulating irrigation water for irrigation reservoirs in scientific and reasonable phases; Irrigation teams assign staff and workers to lead water, prioritizing water for the end of the canal and high areas that are difficult to irrigate.
With the central budget, the province and Ngoc Lac district have just invested in a number of irrigation works such as repairing and upgrading Ngoc Do lake (Ngoc Son commune), Bai Co lake (Thuy Son commune), Ngoc Mun lake (Cao Ngoc commune), Nam lake (Kien Tho commune), Bai Moc dam (Thach Lap commune), Lien Thanh lake canal system (Phung Minh commune), Hon Sung lake (My Tan commune); repairing and upgrading Bai Toc dam (Ngoc Lac town), Kien Tri dam (Kien Tho commune), Bai Trung dam, Mo Mu dam (Minh Son commune), Vo Khu dam (Ngoc Trung commune), Dong Gia lake (Thuy Son commune),... which have effectively served agricultural production. Currently, units are focusing on renovating and upgrading a number of irrigation works such as Bai Du lake (Dong Thinh commune), Lau Thuong dam (Phung Giao commune), Cay Dua lake (Minh Tien commune), Nan lake (Nguyet An commune), Roc Dam lake (Phung Minh commune),...
With the motto "The State and the People work together", the communes in the area have invested funds, labor, and local materials to renovate and repair dozens of irrigation works; solidly built dozens of kilometers of intra-field canals, main canals of irrigation lakes... Every year, the district and communes have mobilized the entire population to do intra-field irrigation, dredge and clear the flow of canals, repair minor damage to works, build embankments in areas and plots to retain water. In addition, the communes and villages have also promoted their internal strength to construct small works such as: temporary dams to raise water from rivers and streams to irrigate and support more than 1,000 hectares of crops.
However, according to our actual survey, the remaining works managed by the locality were mostly built before 1984, the head part was built, the canal system is almost non-existent, currently many works have degraded, the effectiveness of serving agricultural production is limited. Currently, the basin of many reservoirs in the area does not have enough water to irrigate the area of crops. Some works are seriously damaged, not promoting the effectiveness of serving production as designed. Many works have not been invested synchronously, the irrigation canal system is still earthen ditches such as Doi Trang lake (Nguyet An commune), Thanh Nien lake (Ngoc Lien commune), Hon Sung lake (My Tan commune)... It is forecasted that at the end of April, the hot weather will have more than 300 hectares of spring rice crop having difficulty in irrigation water, drought, concentrated in communes such as My Tan, Cao Ngoc, Ngoc Son.
To ensure sufficient irrigation water for crops, in recent months, Ngoc Lac district has mobilized people to contribute to dredging irrigation works in the fields and fields, temporarily repairing degraded and damaged irrigation systems. Finding sources of water remaining in lakes, ponds, and streams, directing communes to mobilize oil pumps and local vehicles to pump and drain water into the fields. Communes with lakes and dams have proactively repaired, dredged canals and developed drought prevention plans, regulated irrigation water appropriately for crop growth and development; developed plans, prepared materials, forces, vehicles... to specifically respond to incidents of lakes and dams. From 2020 to present, Ngoc Lac district has reviewed and proactively converted nearly 110 hectares of rice fields without water sources or with uncertain water sources to grow drought-tolerant crops, in order to minimize damage caused by drought. Currently, more than 3,050 hectares of spring rice crop in 2024 in Ngoc Lac district basically have enough water for crop growth and development.
