China considers Taiwan an inalienable part of Chinese territory. Mr Wang told Mr Blinken that Taiwan is part of China and “is not and will never be a country”.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that while communication channels between China and the United States remained open, Washington had stepped up efforts to contain Beijing. "The consequences for China-US relations are still accumulating and the challenges are increasing," he said.

Mr. Blinken also discussed the relationship between China and Russia. The United States recently imposed sanctions on Chinese companies selling semiconductors to Russia.

The two foreign ministers also discussed a recent unity agreement between Palestinian political groups brokered by China.
