According to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in January 2024, Vietnam exported 422,850 tons of cassava and cassava products, worth 195.63 million USD, up 47.3% in volume and 38.1% in value compared to December 2023; compared to January 2023, up 79.6% in volume and 112.7% in value.
Regarding export prices, in January 2024, the average export price of cassava and cassava products reached 462.7 USD/ton, down 6.2% compared to December 2023, but up 18.5% compared to January 2023.
In terms of cassava alone, in January 2024, cassava exports reached 76,110 tons, worth 19.98 million USD, a sharp increase of 369.6% in volume and 340.8% in value compared to December 2023; compared to January 2023, an increase of 30.9% in volume and 36.4% in value.
The average export price of cassava was at 262.6 USD/ton, down 6.1% compared to December 2023, but up 4.2% compared to January 2023.

In January 2024, China was still the largest export market for cassava and cassava products of Vietnam, accounting for 95.06% in volume and 94.05% in value of the total export of cassava and cassava products of the whole country, reaching 401,940 tons, worth 183.98 million USD, up 48.4% in volume and 38.7% in value compared to December 2023; compared to January 2023, up 80.3% in volume and 113.6% in value.
The average export price of cassava and cassava products to this market was 457.7 USD/ton, down 6.5% compared to December 2023, but up 18.5% compared to January 2023. In addition, in January 2024, cassava and cassava product exports to some markets also grew well compared to the same period in 2023, notably the Taiwan market increased by 66.6%; Malaysia increased by 366.9%.
Market demand increased, so in the 10 days of mid-February 2024, the price of raw cassava in Tay Ninh increased slightly. The price of finished cassava starch has not fluctuated after the Lunar New Year holiday, currently cassava starch is offered by businesses at around 4,000 - 4,100 yuan/ton, DAF.
In addition to China, the Taiwanese market also tends to increase purchases of cassava and cassava products from Vietnam. According to statistics from the Taiwan Financial Agency, in 2023, the Taiwanese market imported 322,110 tons of cassava starch (HS 110814), worth 171.32 million USD, down 4.5% in volume and 4.4% in value compared to 2022.
Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos are the largest markets supplying cassava starch to the Taiwanese market. Of which, the Taiwanese market reduced imports of cassava starch from Thailand, while imports from Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos increased compared to 2022.
In 2023, Vietnam is the second largest market supplying cassava starch to the Taiwanese market, reaching 47,250 tons, worth 24.85 million USD, up 26.1% in volume and 25.4% in value compared to 2022.
Vietnam's cassava starch market share accounts for 14.67% of the total imported cassava starch volume of the Taiwanese market, higher than the 11.11% level in 2022. Meanwhile, Thailand's cassava starch market share accounts for 75.51%, lower than the 86.06% level in 2022.
While the demand for cassava and cassava starch in this market remains low and has not fluctuated in recent years, Vietnam's exports to this market are unlikely to increase sharply in the near future.
