A rich cultural tradition accumulated over thousands of years; along with human dignity bearing “very Vietnamese” characteristics. That is the foundation for shaping the cultural appearance and people of Thanh in today’s era.

Culture is the soul...
Thanh Hoa, in the historical process of building and defending the country of the nation, has affirmed the solid position of the land of "spiritual land and talented people". Because Thanh land is the starting land of many monarchical dynasties, from Tien Le, Ho dynasty, Le So dynasty, Le Trung Hung and Nguyen dynasty; at the same time, it is the "thang moc" land of the Nguyen lords and Trinh lords. Not to mention, this arduous but heroic land was once the place where many important events of the country took place, recorded quite fully in the official history books from ancient - medieval to modern times.
Discussing this land, there have been many profound comments and interpretations by historians and researchers from ancient times to the present. The most famous and indispensable comment is the comment of historian Phan Huy Chu in "Historical Records of Dynasties": "The beauty of the mountains and rivers together gave birth to many kings and generals, the elite gathered together, giving birth to many scholars. Even the precious products are different from other places. Because the sacred land has talented people, it gives birth to extraordinary people; the prosperous energy together makes it worthy of being the best in the country". The book "Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi" emphasizes the character of the people of Thanh: "The scholars love literature and respect integrity. Every generation has outstanding and generous talents, thanks to the quintessence of the mountains and rivers.
There are many vivid evidences to prove that the above statements are not simply "winged" words, but they come from the historical reality of this land. In particular, the most convincing evidence is the life and career of many heroes who have made great and outstanding contributions to the cause of building and protecting the country through historical periods. A typical example is the hero Trieu Thi Trinh who raised the flag of uprising, fighting the Eastern Ngo invaders in 248. Or in the 10th century, the land of Thanh appeared outstanding figures, such as Duong Dinh Nghe and Le Hoan. Then when the Ho Dynasty failed in its reform, causing the country to fall into the hands of the Ming invaders, Binh Dinh King Le Loi appeared on the political stage. The victorious Lam Son uprising laid the foundation for the birth of one of the most prosperous dynasties in the history of Dai Viet, especially under the reign of King Le Thanh Tong (1460-1497)...
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Nhue, “Except for a short period when the Tay Son dynasty governed the country (1788-1802), for most of the historical period from the 15th century to the mid-20th century, the bravery, intelligence, and contributions of the Thanh people were clearly demonstrated through the presence of dynasties associated with three major families: the Le, Trinh, and Nguyen families - with authentic origins in Thanh. That affirms the stature and important position of Thanh Hoa land in the long history of building and defending the country of the Vietnamese people. That position and stature are specifically demonstrated through the unique qualities of outstanding figures, of the noble and powerful families in Thanh land that were present in the history of Vietnam in the Middle Ages.”
Also in the process of building and defending the country, with the important contributions of historical figures and the great creativity of the people here, a unique, rich and valuable cultural depth has been created. Thanks to that, Thanh Hoa is considered the cradle of heritage, with the development of ancient cultures, sites associated with the formation and development of human society, such as the Do Mountain site, Con Moong cave... In particular, this is also the place where traces of one of the peaks of Vietnamese civilization were found: Dong Son culture. Although found in many areas, the Ma River basin is considered a major center of Dong Son culture. Dong Son relics are distributed over a large area from coastal plains to mountainous areas, in which they are more concentrated in the plains where the Ma River, Chu River and coastal plains converge.
It can be said that Dong Son culture appeared and left a strong mark on this "spiritual" Thanh land. This is also the foundation for Thanh people to continue to cultivate a cultural tradition rich in identity and value. Of which, only counting tangible cultural heritage, there are 1,535 relics, with 810 relics that have been ranked (706 provincial-level relics, 99 national-level relics, 5 special national-level relics and 1 world cultural heritage). But that is not all. Because talking about the treasure of Thanh cultural heritage would be extremely incomplete if we did not mention the rich intangible cultural heritage, reflecting the height and depth of folk wisdom. These are customs, rituals, beliefs, folk knowledge, cultural activities... that are both rustic, simple, sophisticated, and imbued with national identity. In particular, dozens of intangible cultural heritages have been honored as national intangible cultural heritages. These are heritages that have accompanied the ups and downs of the land's history and have overcome the strict test of time, to always "live" and contribute to shaping the appearance and depth of Thanh Hoa's cultural traditions. At the same time, they are a convincing proof of the uniqueness and rich value of Thanh Hoa's cultural treasures in the cultural community of Vietnamese ethnic groups.
The shield is strong
It is said that the operation of society is always regulated by the system of values that each community and nation has accumulated throughout history. These are patriotism, community solidarity, praise of labor, love of life, desire for happiness, etc. These values are also the core elements that have woven together the depth of the nation's historical and cultural traditions. However, culture is inherently not an "immutable constant", especially in the context of strong integration as it is today, culture is the most "vulnerable" factor. Therefore, we must make efforts to protect and promote the quintessential and core values of national culture; selectively absorb progressive cultural values of humanity in accordance with national cultural traditions; at the same time, create a solid "shield" to protect traditional culture from negative, foreign, and reactionary cultural flows. This is also a requirement for each locality, including Thanh Hoa province, in protecting and promoting cultural resources for development.
Lam Kinh - "memorial capital" of the Le So dynasty.
In recent years, along with focusing on economic development, the Party Committee and the government of Thanh Hoa province have always paid attention to the cultural cause and considered culture an important pillar for development. In particular, the birth of Resolution No. 17-NQ/TU, dated July 4, 2024 of the Provincial Party Committee Executive Committee on continuing to build and develop Thanh Hoa culture and people in the new period, not only aims to strengthen the Party's leadership in the cause of cultural development; but also creates a premise for culture to truly be on par with economics, politics and society.
With the role of guiding and leading the cultural development, Resolution No. 17-NQ/TU has put forward core viewpoints that are both comprehensive and profound. It emphasizes that Thanh Hoa culture and people are not only a spiritual foundation, but also a solid material foundation, an endogenous resource, an important driving force for the rapid and sustainable development of the province. Therefore, building and developing Thanh Hoa culture and people must be based on preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values of the homeland; at the same time, proactively and selectively absorbing the quintessence of national and contemporary culture, ensuring suitability and enriching the cultural values of the homeland.
Culture in general and core values and identities in particular are formed, refined and cultivated over a long period of time. Therefore, the construction and development of Thanh Hoa culture and people must also be identified as a regular, continuous, long-term task, closely linked together. In particular, the core focus of cultural development is human development, especially the development of comprehensively developed people with noble personalities. Maximize the human factor; take people as the center, subject, main resource and goal of development.
Culture plays a particularly important role in development, but in reality, awareness of the role and position of culture is still "not up to par" in some places. Therefore, Resolution No. 17-NQ/TU emphasized that building and developing Thanh Hoa culture and people is the responsibility of the entire political system and the entire people, under the leadership of Party committees at all levels and the management and administration of the government. At the same time, promoting the advisory and coordination role of all levels, sectors, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and organizations, especially the awareness and responsibility of each cadre, Party member and the role of cultural creativity of all classes of people...
Indian politician and culturalist Jawaharlal Nehru made a very profound observation: “An individual human being is like a certain historical depth. They are highly valued by a past origin...”. Therefore, the proud “appearance” that each Thanh Hoa citizen is wearing is woven from countless threads of historical and cultural traditions of this land. Then, the responsibility of each person is to continue to protect and nurture that traditional source to be thicker, more beautiful, more valuable and more vital, to pass on to future generations.
