Boldly change the way of production

In Bac Son hamlet, Nghi Thiet commune, for the past 2 years, Mr. Hoang Ngoc Van and his wife have devoted all their efforts to taking care of their family's special garden. That is a 1,500m2 greenhouse built with an investment of more than 600 million VND. Mr. Van said that, grasping the trend of green, clean, and safe agricultural production, he discussed with his wife to pool their capital to build a greenhouse to grow clean vegetables, tubers, and fruits.

Mr. Van and his wife have boldly innovated the family's agricultural production method, which has been familiar for decades, thanks in part to the encouragement and support of the Farmers' Association and local authorities. To implement this investment idea, Mr. Hoang Ngoc Van's family received more than 100 million VND from the District People's Committee and Farmers' Association under the State's programs and projects to encourage agricultural production models in the area.

“This is the second year we have grown vegetables, tubers and fruits in the greenhouse. For melons, we harvest at the end of September. After the melon season ends, we will switch to growing winter cucumbers, mainly baby cucumbers. Each season has its own vegetables, grown in the greenhouse with an automatic drip irrigation system, so we save effort and reduce labor costs,” Mr. Van shared.

Mr. Van's greenhouse area of 1,500m2 grows about 300 melon trees. After each tree flowers and bears 2-4 fruits, the smaller fruits will be pruned, leaving only 1 fruit per tree for care. After about 3 months, the weight of the melons will reach about 1.5-2.5 kg/fruit and can be harvested. With 3,000 trees/crop, minus the loss, each crop yields an average of about 2,500 fruits. The selling price at the garden depends on the time, ranging from 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, each crop of melons brings in 100 - 150 million VND, minus the cost, the profit is about 70-100 million VND. Mr. Hoang Ngoc Van also shared that depending on the type of melon, it will require different care and give different values. Among them, green melons have higher value than yellow melons, but are more "difficult" in terms of fertilization requirements.

To ensure high crop yields, in addition to following the technical growing procedures that agricultural staff support and guide, growers also need to regularly update the situation by staying close to the fields and gardens.

Towards high-tech agricultural production

In Nghi Loc district, high-tech agricultural production models in the direction of organic, green, and clean like Mr. Hoang Ngoc Van's household are being promoted and supported by the locality with specific mechanisms and policies through Project No. 13 - DA/HU on "Developing high-tech agricultural applications in Nghi Loc district in the period of 2022-2025".

The leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghi Loc district said that currently, the whole district has 24 high-tech agricultural models, with a total area of nearly 160,000 m2 . Of which, there are 22 models of producing melons, grapes, vegetables, tubers, and fruits grown on substrates in greenhouses, using automatic drip irrigation technology, with an area of more than 50,000 m2 ; there are 2 models of growing oranges and grapefruits using drip irrigation technology, saving water with an area of 109,000 m2 .

These models yield a total output of over 403 tons of tubers and fruits, with a revenue of over 10 billion VND/year. Through practical evaluation, it is shown that agricultural production applying high technology in greenhouses and membrane houses in Nghi Loc district has significantly increased productivity and profits compared to traditional production. Specifically, growing melons, vegetables, tubers and fruits in greenhouses is 10 times higher; growing oranges and grapefruits using high technology has a yield 4 times higher than traditional production.

In addition, these models also attract and create jobs for about 100 regular workers, with an average stable income of about 80 million VND/person/year.

From 2018 to 2020, Nghi Loc district supported 350 million VND/model to build greenhouses with an area of 2,500 m2 or more. From 2021 to present, the support will not exceed 200 million VND/model to build greenhouses with an area of 1,000 m2 or more. The total support cost in both phases is 4.55 billion VND.

This support has encouraged people to mobilize resources to invest in building greenhouses, investing in applying safe and high-quality production processes; gradually transforming people's production thinking towards large-scale production, applying high technology to bring quality and effective products to supply high-end markets, bringing jobs and relatively high incomes to farmers.

Project No. 13-DA/HU of Nghi Loc district on "Developing high-tech agriculture in Nghi Loc district in the period of 2022-2025" identifies goals and 5 tasks and solutions to promote high-tech agricultural production. In particular, by 2025, the value of high-tech agricultural production is expected to reach over 2,400 billion VND; the growth rate of high-tech agriculture is expected to reach over 190%/year.
