The Cham people have a rich and diverse cultural life, including life cycle rituals associated with the cycle of birth, maturity and death of a person.

On the evening of December 10, in Tan Chau town, An Giang, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province coordinated with the People's Committee of Tan Chau town to organize a ceremony to announce the Decision of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to register the intangible cultural heritage of the life cycle rituals of the Cham Islam people and the brocade weaving profession of the Cham people (Chau Phong commune, Tan Chau town) in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

The life cycle rituals of the Cham Islam people in An Giang have historical value, consolidating the community and preserving traditional culture. Through the rituals, we can know the historical origin of the Cham people, their migration and settlement in An Giang province. The rituals also help to strengthen the intimacy between members of the Cham community. This is also an environment to preserve the traditional cultural beauty of the Cham Islam people such as costumes, cuisine, language or folk art forms such as: dance, singing, musical instruments (Repbana drum...).

Ms. Tran Thi Hoa Binh, Vice Chairman of Tan Chau Town People's Committee said: With typical values, containing many unique traditional cultural elements, the life cycle ritual of the Cham Islam people was announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Decision No. 157/QD-BVHTTDL to include "Life cycle ritual of the Cham Islam people in An Giang province" in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

According to the Vice Chairman of Tan Chau Town People's Committee: In addition to the life cycle ritual of the Cham Islam people, Tan Chan Town is also honored to have another type of intangible cultural heritage recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which is the traditional weaving craft of the Cham ethnic group in Chau Phong commune. This is a very unique traditional craft that appeared in An Giang since the early days of the Cham people settling there in the early years of the 18th century.

The brocade weaving craft of the Cham people in Chau Phong commune is not only unique in its techniques and human creativity, but also contains cultural and historical values ​​of the nation. The brocade weaving craft of the Cham people clearly shows the characteristics of agricultural origin such as tools, raw materials, and usage values.

Brocade weaving products are used for daily life and religious activities, in the life cycle rituals of the Cham people in An Giang. Brocade weaving is not only a priceless asset left by our ancestors but also a driving force for the economic and social development of the Cham community in An Giang.

With those typical values, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 480/QD-BVHTTDL to include in the list of national intangible cultural heritage "Traditional craft of brocade weaving of Cham people in Chau Phong commune, Tan Chau town, An Giang province".

Mr. Truong Ba Trang, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang said: In recent years, cultural heritage has increasingly proven its role as an abundant resource for economic growth and a solid foundation for spiritual life, an environment that nurtures and enriches cultural identity and cultural diversity.

Protecting and promoting the value of cultural heritage is also to meet the people's increasing cultural needs, contributing to building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity and contributing to the world's cultural heritage treasure.

To promote the value of recognized intangible cultural heritages, Mr. Truong Ba Trang said: The cultural sector said it will advise the Provincial People's Committee to have mechanisms and policies suitable to the local situation, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of State management in the field of cultural heritage. In which, it will harmoniously resolve the relationship between cultural heritage conservation and socio-economic development; create jobs, develop traditional occupations for ethnic people, in harmony with the local economic development strategy.

Up to now, An Giang has 7 heritages recognized as national cultural heritages: Via Ba Chua Xu festival on Sam mountain; Bay Nui bull racing festival; knowledge and techniques of writing on palm leaves of the Khmer ethnic group and Ky Yen festival at Thoai Ngoc Hau communal house (Thoai Son district); Di Ke stage performance art of the Khmer people in O Lam commune (Tri Ton district, An Giang province); life cycle rituals of the Cham Islam people (Tan Chau town and An Phu district) and brocade weaving of the Cham people in Chau Phong commune, Tan Chau town. With 7 national intangible cultural heritages, An Giang has surpassed the average number of national cultural heritages compared to the whole country.
